Small sided game 4v4+1 (10 mins)

Players come to the session after 1 hour of speed, agility and strength training.

Activity 1- Small Sided games. 4v4+1 (keepers as neutrals if possible)

Restriction- Must complete 2 player combination before scoring.

Key- Use the small sided games to remind defenders to maintain intensity for a game realistic session.

- Allow players to find ways of combining and going to goal.

Passing Combination Patterns (10 mins)

Active rest- Players come back from a drink break and get into partner juggling- Challenge is to complete 20 passes between partners without the ball hitting the ground.

Progression- Over the head juggling passes, to work on combining in the air.

Activity 2- Short, short, up, back and through. Passing pattern.

Key points-

1- Short sharp movement to create angles. Players in the middle should always be working on opposite angles.

2- Player who moves to receive long (up), should go as far as possible, they can step back to the ball when the pass is played. Often they are too willing to come back to the ball early and if the pass isn't accurate they struggle to move to the ball/slows down the play.

3- Player receiving the set pass back must stay below the ball and work to create an angle and get in the player receiving the long passes eye-line.

4- As players are always working on opposites, clear visual clues must be giving with the movement. The player closest to the ball should dictate where they are playing with their movement. The player further away should move to reflect that clear movement.

If the movement is quick, clear and at angles the ball can be moved accurately 1 touch!

2v2 to 2 targets (15 mins)

Activity 3- 2v2 to 2 targets- 18 players- 6 in white, 6 in blue, 6 in red.

Must hit a target, play a minimum of 1 pass to teammate in the middle before hitting opposite target to score a point. If you play back to the same target it remains your possession.

3 Points wins the game. Winners decide if they stay on a dominate or leave their opponents in.

Key- Partners in the middle continue to work on opposites. 1 player being high will create the space in the middle to pass. Changing high, low and the sides you are playing on will unbalance the defenders and create passing lanes.

1- Give and go. Player 1 receives and plays back to target which draws the defender tight. Player 2 stays long but checks in front of their defender to receive the pass from the target. Player 1 spins in behind their defender to receive the 1 touch pass from player 2.

2- Player 1 receives the ball on the half turn (defender not tight enough to stop it). Player 2 drifts in behind their defender. Split pass is played between the two defenders for player 2 to run onto and hit target.

3- Switching high and low- Player 1 checks in short to draw defender closer to the ball, then spins in behind the defender (long). Player 2 watches the movement and uses the visual clue to check to the ball (short) on the half turn. The ball is played quickly through the split in front of player 1 to hit the target.

2v2 to goal. Defend then attack (15 mins)

Activity 4- 2v2 to goal- Defenders stay in and receive the ball.

2 players from each team come in and play 2v2 to goal. When the ball is dead (goal or out of play) the team that started with the ball (attackers) switch with the two players waiting on their team who become the defenders. The team that defended before the ball went dead then receives a ball in from their team and become the attacking team.

The rotation after the initial 2v2 is DEFEND, THEN RECEIVE AND ATTACK!

Key-

Working on opposites. Players both tend to want to go short to receive the ball.

Placement and weight of pass is huge. Into feet can be hit with pace (easiest option), passes placed for players to run onto must be played at angles, through gaps with enough weight to beat the defenders, rather than hit with pace through splits.

Movement high, low and across the field will create passing lanes. The key is for the player on the ball to play with their heads up and see them early.

Game 6v6 1 goal winner stays on (10 mins)

Activity 5- 6v6 3 teams- 1 goal winner stays on. New team on starts with the ball.

Challenge the players to continue to work as opposite pairs. They should have the freedom to move where they see opportunities and create angles.

Key areas in the attacking half. Width- both high and low. Depth in the center to change the point of attack. 3 attackers should look to maintain this shape but interchange.

Defenders (on the attacking side) should be watching the spaces wide to make attacking overload runs, when the space develops.
