First touch and awareness passing sequence
Grid: 25 x 25 yards
Set-up: 10-12 players within an area and move randomly around it.
- Start with a ratio of one ball for every 3 players.
- Number players 1-9
- Once players pass it they move to another part of the grid.
- Once ball reaches last player, he passes to number 1 to begin process again.
Progressions:
1) 2 touches
2) 1 touch
2b) U10-U11 > First pass is short, the next pass is long. The next player in sequence must therefore move closer or further away to receive.
3) First pass is low, the next is high. Again receiving players must move into positions to receive the pass either along the ground or in the air.
Coaching Points: Move the ball quickly and accurately, position yourself with an open body. Are you peaking? 5 yard sprint after pass.
Scoring: As a group, can you keep four / five / six balls alive for 60 seconds?
Caution: Ensure players are not static or remain in one area/position and are moving around the area when not in possession (this will happen more and more as more footballs are involved).

Roles of Each Player in 7v7 in Build-up Phase: 1-2-3-1
7v7 grid size: 40 x 60
9v9 or 11v11 in 45 x 70 yards.
- 6 seconds to win it back
Coaching points: *****LET THEM PLAY!!!! DONT STOP IT EVERY TWO SECONDS AND DONT OVER COACH. LET THEM PLAY AND MAKE ONE OR TWO FREEZES. COACH IN THE FLOW AND IN NATURAL STOPPAGES!!!!!!
#1: Role of the Goal Keeper: keepers should learn how to support the back line in possession, how to distribute and be the first line of attack instead of just punt the ball long. Keepers need to learn to pass the ball on goal kicks rather than just kick it long.
#4&5: Role of the Center Backs: The back line plays a vital role in possession. The defenders need to learn how to support the midfield in possession, how to make the field big and how to help relieve pressure. The defense also plays a crucial role in switching the point of attack.
#6 Role of the Defensive Midfield: the number 6 player dictates the rhythm of possession. He needs to learn how to support the attack from behind the ball.
#2&3 Role of the Wide Players: Players 2 & 3 provide width and penetration. They need to learn to stay wide and open body to the field and provide support to the midfielders.
#9 Role of the Center Forward: Player 9 provides depth and an outlet from high pressing opponents. She needs to learn to stretch the field and stay high and central and be available for the long pass option from the back.
