GROUP DRILL : Passing and Receiving Squares

Equipment Needed

  • 2 different coloured cones to create the inside and outside edges of the squares
  • enough footballs for 1 per pair as minimum
How Does it work?
  • 1. Start off with asking the players to ask for the ball from one of the players that has a ball. Have a touch and pass it back. Then go find someone else to repeat this with. (when asking can they ask and point tot he foot they want it on) Use only the inner square
  • 2. Ask for the ball this time and then turn and dribble away before turning again and returning the ball to original player. Then go find someone else.
  • 3. Progression from 2. Can the player that passed it move and ask for the ball back as the other player now with the ball turns and has to get eyes up to see where team mate has moved to. Then repeat and find another player with a ball.
  • 4. Progression from 3. Can the player receiving the ball dribble to a blue cone on the outside, while the original player moves into space by finding a space between red cones near by to get the ball back (once player has dribbled round the blue cones) Then repeat by find another player with a ball.
  • 5. Split the group in 2. One group with a ball in the red square and the players without a ball on the outside square between blue cones (not on them as younger ones especially will probably stand on them and get distracted) On the coaches whistle can players with the ball exit the red square and find a player on the outside blue square to pass the ball to. On receiving the ball at the blue cones this player must now try to avoid the player who passed the ball to them and get to the other side of the outside square without being tackled. If they get across then that player can return to the red square and the other to the blue cones and wait for the next game to begin. (Coach to put time limit on this so its fast paced)
  • 6. If enough balls for one per player or not quite enough you can put players with a ball inside the red square and then have the other half of players between the red and blue square with a ball each or at least half of them with a ball. The game now is to have the players between the squares try and knock the ball out of the red square from the players feet by passing it into the area. If a player in the red square has their ball knocked out the area they are out and must join the team in the outside area. make sure balls are kept below knee height and the fun is kept high but also technique too.
