General Possession / Out of Possession / Defend the Overload
15 Minutes
Welsh Way Principles:
Develop understanding of how to win back possession when defending against an overload considering the anaerobic output
Organisation / Area Size:
Area is two 30x25 boxes with a channel in between
There are 3 teams of 5 players in the practice
How:
The teams will be coached on how to defend against the overload when playing 3v5
Working in 4 blocks of 2 minutes
Explanation:
The 2 teams of 5 on the outside work together, with the middle team working out of possession. 3 players from the out of possession team will press the team with the ball in an attempt to win possession.
The team in possession must complete 4 passes in their box with their 5 pass being a switch to the team in the opposite box. The team out of possession then must have 3 players press that team. If the team out of possession win the ball back or it goes out of play, they swap with the team that lost the ball who then become the team out of possession.
Practice split into 4 blocks of 2 minutes with terminal interventions between each block to allow for player recovery:
1st Block: Recognise opposition movement - Have the opposition made the pitch big or can we box them in?
2nd Block: Press quickly - Nearest player to the ball needs to quickly apply pressure to slow down the opposition
3rd Block: Protect the middle - Players around the ball need to protect the middle to prevent split passes and stop the switch of play
4th Block: Leave the furthest players - Leave the furthest players that aren't an immediate threat or affecting the game
To score, you earn a point when in possession and completing 4 passes + switch & you earn a point when out of possession if you win the ball back
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
The practice is conditioned with the three sets of teams that can transition from in to out of possession. The teams are challenged when defending against the overload to win possession in 3v5 situations.
Key Points:
Recognise opposition movement
Press quickly
Protect the Middle
Leave the furthest players
