Keeping Possession with an Overload

Set up

  • 15x15 box
  • 4 goals in each corner as targets for defensive team
  • Even numbers in the box + 'common' player to create an overload
  • 2 extra players on the outside to create a target for the attackers

Attacking team

  • Attacking team (red) keeping the ball in the box
  • Point for switching play to the opposite player on their team
  • Extra 'common' player playing for the team in possession to create an overload
Defending team
  • Defending team (blue) are out numbered when out of possession to create success for reds
  • If blues win the ball back they have four target goals to score in
  • When ball is won back the 'common' player creates an overload to help score

Points for attacking team to consider
  • Overload when in possession, can they find the spare player?
  • Body shape and first touch need to be positive to see the picture
  • Player movement off the ball
  • Keep width to increase success

  • 'Common' players outside the area as wingers
  • Attacking overloads for each team in their attacking area

Attacking team

  • Red team attacking main goal
  • 2 reds start in their defensive area + 3 reds in their attacking area
  • The outside 'common' players will drop down the pitch to create a 4v3 overload for the red team in the defensive area
  • Reds must 'build attack' by making 5 passes in the 4v3 scenario
  • When the passes are made they can attack
