Description

Working to move the ball from back to front as quickly as possible, while maintaining team shape. Focus is on communication, shape and closing the field off to make the attacking team predictable. This session will allow the coach to work with the team as a collective unit and dictate style of team defending.

Shadow play as a unit (20 mins)

Keeper takes goal kick, long throw or punt to opposing team of 10 field players. Red team has maximum of 5 passes to get forward and have a shot on goal. Defending team (blue) applies minimal pressure. Ball must be settled by second player to receive ball after keeper sends long distribution. 7 to 8 repetitions with different penetrating passes and new methods of scoring attempted each restart (i.e. can't always have striker being the target for shot on goal). Red team must all reset inside cone area each restart. Cone are is from the 30 yard line to 30 yard line, and top of the number to top of the numbers.

Team shape and collective defending (50 mins)

Blue team is allowed to shift the ball from side to side. Once received by an outside player it is played to the back and line and switched to opposite side. Red team works as a unit to shit and mirror. Outside winger can not leave the cone area until winger to their side receives the ball. Coaching points are proper angles and getting in passing lanes.

Next progression is working to find the target player. Add a second blue to the central area and blue swings ball side to side trying to find a central player or the target player. If red intercepts they may counter attack and work to get a shot off in 5 passes or less. If Blue wins ball back or keeper receives ball then red returns as a unit to the cone area. If blue team finds the feet of the target player then a point is awarded.

Last progression is full field scrimmage to goals. Blue team in 1-3-5-2 and Red team in 1-4-2-3-1.
