Description

Session topic: Shooting

Learning objectives: - To be able to take a shot first time using the laces. - To be able to perform different types of shots. - Be able to create space for a goal scoring opportunity both on and off the ball.

Player information: - 10-12 players - 5-11 years old- Mixed ability

Session length: 1 hour

Order of practices: Blocked, Variable, Random (SSG).

Equipment:

- Cones/markers - Poles- 2 goals (optional) - 10 balls minimum - Bibs (2 different colours)

5 corners:

- Technical: when using the laces, ankle should be locked with toes facing downwards; strike through the middle of the ball; head over the ball; follow through the ball; can use the inside or outside of the foot for extra spin; use inside foot for close range placement. - Tactical: putting the players into a "Barcelona vs PSG" match scenario where the team playing as Barcelona must score 3 goals in the last 5 minutes to win the tie. This gives the players the opportunity to discuss tactics in team meetings in order to win the game effectively. Allowing plays to play as Barcelona or PSG also gives them the opportunity to play as their favourite role models, for example, Messi for Barcelona and Cavani for PSG. - Physical: area sizes throughout the session were relatively large when considering the age I am working with. This is to give the players more space and time to take a shot in attacking areas. These areas can always be adjusted slightly to meet the needs of your players. Work-to-rest ratios are kept at 5 minutes of work with 1 minute of rest throughout the SSG at the end, however, work periods are kept even shorter during the previous practices supported with 30 second to 1 minute rests. - Psychological: players are given plenty of targets and challenges throughout the session which gives them something to work towards keeping them motivated. Can also give the players an opportunity to create their own challenges and targets which will give them that extra motivation to achieve these. Some conditions are also placed in the practices to help adapt and challenge some of the participants playing style. - Social: team meetings and problem-solving tasks are held during the SSG at the end with the "Barcelona vs PSG" scenario. They need to discuss tactics depending on which team they have been given in order to win the game effectively.

Blocked (15 mins) (15 mins)

Organisation:

- 2 cones set up where two players should stand to link up the play.

- 1 pole set up further away for where the attacking players start.

- 1 goalkeeper in the goal in order to save the shots.

- 15 minute practice

- Any number of players (5-11 years old)

Equipment:

- 2 cones/markers.

- 1 pole or marker for where the attacking players start.

- 1/2 goals depending on the amount of players (can also use poles or cones if no access to goals).

- 10 balls minimum

Description:

- Attacking players start from the pole with a ball at their feet. There are also two other cones set up as shown in the diagram where two other players should stand ready to feed the balls.

- When the attacking player plays the ball into the first player, he/she must make a movement either left or right (using verbal communication also) whilst the first blue player sets the ball into his/her run.

- The previous step is then repeated for the second blue player before taking a shot towards goal (to start with this can be either one touch or two tocuhes).

- This cycle should be repeated until all attacking players have had around 2-3 shots at goal. Roles should then be swapped round with the two blue players.

- If there are a lot of players present at the session then more than one goal should be set up within the session area to give players more of an opportunity to shoot. There shouldn't be more than 5 attacking players per goal.

Progressions/ Regressions:

- Can progress it to where the same movement is still present, however, for the second blue player the attacking player must chip the ball into the blue player's hands. From there the blue player will set the red player for a volley/ half volley towards goal. This helps the players practice different types of shots.

- Can progress this further to where te players then have the ownership to decide when approaching the second blue player whether they want to strike the ball on the floor or in the air depending on what they need to work on the most.

- Another progression can also include two players moving and setting into the blue players rather than just the one, encouraging better and more efficient link up play before striking. One red player will pass the ball and the blue player will set the other red player for the next phase of the attack.

Conditions:

- Can eventually introduce a condition where all passes should be performed using one touch only.

Challenges:

- Can you strike the ball first time when receiving the ball on the edge of the box?

- Can you play at a match tempo? Imagine a defender trying to chase you down.

Coaching points:

- When shooting using the laces, ankle should be locked with the toes facing diagonaly downwards.

- Striking through the middle of the ball.

- Head over the ball (not leaning back).

- Follow through the ball, follow through should go towards target.

- Can use the inside or the outside of the foot to add spin to the ball.

- Inside of the foot can also be used when wanting to place the ball past the goalkeeper, more effective from close range.

Coaching interventions:

- Fly-by: can give players hints and pointers on how to strike the ball properly and getting their head over the ball to keep it on target. Quick encouraging tips should be used towards players throughout the session.

- Drive-by: as a coach you should take certain players out to teach the players how to keep their head over the ball if they are struggling. Should also look at who is struggling with the actual striking of the ball to see if they need any one on one work on the side.

- Coaching process: can step in to show the players as a group a slowed down demonstration of the technique breaking this down step by step. They should be con

Variable (20 mins) (20 mins)

Organisation:

- Two teams of attacking players (3 on each team) set up on the far side of the pitch as shown in the session diagram.

- Two teams of defenders (2 on each team) set up on each side of the goal as shw in the session diagram.

- The shaded area is 30 x 20 yards, which is the area the players should be playing in.

- 10-12 players for this practice ideally, however, if there are a lot more players then this can be split up across two different areas set up exactly the same.

- 20 minute practice

Equipment:

- Cones/markers.

- Goal or poles to set up a goal.

- Bibs (6 reds, 4 blues)

- 10 balls

Description:

- One group of defenders should pass the ball over to one of the attacking teams. The attacking team will then control the ball and attack the goal using link up play. This is made easy to start with as there is an attacking overload (3 vs 2) so there should be plenty of chances to shoot at goal.

- This should be repeated for both teams twice over before swapping the attackers over with the defenders. This cycle should be repeated until first progression/regression is made.

Progressions/ Regressions:

- Can progress to where it becomes a 3 vs 3 rather than a 3 vs 2 overload. This will make it harder for the attackers to create a chance to shoot.

- Can make the first progression easier by allowing one of the defenders to become a floater for the attacking teams. This will make it a 4 vs 3 against the same 3 defenders every time.

- Can introduce a competition between the atackers and the defenders. 10 balls represents 10 attacks. If the defenders win the ball, they win a point. If the attackers score a goal, they win a point. However, the attackers will be awarded two points if they score from a first time shot as this is a much harder shooting technique. The team with the most points after all the attacks have finished wins.

Conditions:

- Players have to perform a shot within 15 seconds of each attack. If they fins this too easy at first then this can be reduced to 10 seconds. This increases the competitiveness of the session along with the attackers vs defenders progression which will encourage more match tempo plays.

Challenges:

- Can you create space with the ball to perform a shot? Need to be able to shift the ball quickly.

- If a teammate has set the ball, can you get a quick snapshot off first time?

- From close range, rather than hitting with the laces can you finesse with the inside of your foot?

- Dont always have to shoot. Can you set the ball to your teammate in a better position?

Targets:

- Can the attackers score 3 or more shots first tme during the competition against the defenders.

- Inidividual targets: Can you hit the target more than 5 times during this practice using any shooting technique?

Coaching points:

- When shooting using the laces, ankle should be locked with the toes facing diagonaly downwards.

- Striking through the middle of the ball.

- Head over the ball (not leaning back).

- Follow through the ball, follow through should go towards target.

- Can use the inside or the outside of the foot to add spin to the ball.

- Inside of the foot can also be used when wanting to place the ball past the goalkeeper, more effective from close range.

Coaching interventions:

- Fly-by: get players to focus on how they can create space to get a shot at goal, both on and off the ball. Give quick reminders of the proper shooting technique if a player's technique isn't right.

- Drive-by: get players comfortable when striking the ball in front of goal, especially when under pressure. If they are really struggling, take them out and really focus on that shooting technique with them in a separate goal by the side. Help them recog

SSG (25 mins)

Organisation:

- 11 players, 5 players on each team with one floater who plays for the team in possession. Floater can be swapped throughout the SSG to give players maximum opportunities to shoot.

- 40 x 30 yard area for the pitch size.

- 25 minute practice

Equipment:

- Cones/markers

- Balls (1 ball in play)

- Bibs (for both teams)

- 2 goals (or poles)

Description:

- Players are using the normal football match rules, however, kick-ins will be used instead of throw-ins. This is because kick-ins will give attackers a beter opportunity to turn and shoot quickly when receiving the ball.

- One floater playing for both teams when numbers are uneven.

- Allow players to play short 5 minute games to keep the practice fresh, introducing new rules and conditions for each game.

Progressions/ Regressions:

- For the second game, the first progression will be that first time shots are now worth 2 goals if they are scored.

- For the third game, the second progression will be that both teams can now only score inside the area. This will encourage players to link up and make runs inside the box in order to create a goal scoring opportunity. Also stops players from shooting from ridiculous ranges when they don't need to.

- For the fourth game, can put both teams into a real game scenario. Barcelona vs PSG, Barcelona need 3 goals in the last 5 minutes in order to qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League. Allow both teams to have a team discussion about tactics depending on whether they are Barcelona or PSG. Coach can have an input in both discussions by asking questions about why they have chosen certain tactics/strategies.

- Can repeat the previous progression, however, teams will swap roles.

Coaching interventions:

- Fly-by: give players constant feedback on pointers on the shooting technique depending on whether this is performed wrong or correctly.

- Drive-by: Can pull certain players during and in-between to help set them targets and challenges for the following games. Let them set their own challenges as they know what would be realistic for them to achieve. Also give them feedback on the shooting technique if needed.

- Coaching process: help players with their decision-making, especially when their team can potentially score a goal. For example, an attacking player might be shooting from a bad position on the pitch, as a coach you can step in here and demonstrate that possibly passing to another teammate or dribbling the ball forward wuld have been the better option rather than shooting.
