Various 7v7 Formations for Your Team to Utilize

At the 7v7 level your formation is a starting point. The main things you need to have for your team is at least one player holding in the back when you are defending and at least one player high in the attack as an option to play through when you are defending.

Other than that your players should play with a freedom on the field. Do not get them stuck in the a mindset that they can only play in certain spots of the field. Encourage creativity of movement and for them to look and find the game. 7v7 is a very fluid game and the more your players can feel and see on their own the more successful they will be as players.

When determining the starting shape of your team it is important to remember that your team's formation is ultimately a starting point for how your teams wants to defend and the natural options you want to provide your team in the attack. Teams playing the same formation can look and operate entirely differently based upon their team's style of play (high press or defending in a low block or building out of the back in a patient possession oriented way or playing direct and looking to get in behind immediately) and also the individual qualities of the players on the team.

Not every team or every player has the capability to perform in the same manner and your formation and tactics can change within your team based on when you sub.

As you determine the best formation for your team it is important to gauge:

  • The traits of your players and put them in the best positions to be successful. Determine the quality of your defenders to understand how much cover they need in the back and how aggressive you can be with your pressing and keeping playing forwards.
  • Determine how you believe your team will be able to best successfully defend as a group (high pressure, low block, where to create your line of confrontation) and how you should utilize a formation that supports it.
  • Determine how your team can be most successful attacking. Do you have more natural wide players, do you have two strong central forwards who need to be on the field in that spot, or is your team going to be built around central midfielders controlling the game with shorter passing through the middle.

When determining your formation remember to teach your team how the principles (team defending and attacking) move and work in your formation and that your players and team will change as the season progresses so your formation can be fluid and change with their abilities.

If you have questions about the formations do not hesitate to contact the technical staff to walk through it.

2-3-1

Most basic and natural 7v7 formation. Provides balance throughout the field and easy coverage throughout the field. Can press or sit deeper with your line of confrontation and provides a lot of simple and easy to see passing options for players all over the field.

1-4-1

Provides more of a presence in the central midfield but a lot less coverage defensively. Can be a really effective formation if you have a high level defender who can play and cover in the back by themselves otherwise you can be really exposed as there will be a lot of space in the back.

1-3-2

Similar to the 1-4-1 but with two up top this is an extremely aggressive attacking formation. You should look to press out this formation with the higher numbers up top and should be able to keep the other team on their heals with extra attacking players high. You do leave yourself extremely exposed in the back and need a very high defender who can cover a lot of ground to play consistently throughout the game.

3-1-2

A formation built through playing up the middle of the field. Gives you a lot of cover in the back but provides fewer natural options for the players to see and find. Outside backs need to get forward into the attack especially on the strong side but will not be able to provide the same width as they would in 2-3-1 formation. The two up top need to be very active with their movement to create space and give players in the back more options to build from back.

3-2-1

Very defensive formation. Will clog up the field in the middle and in the back to help eliminate space for other team to play through you or behind you. Does not provide a lot of support in the attack for your 9 as it will be difficult for outside backs to get forward to provide width and stretch the field. Formation can be effective with a really strong 9 and two really strong 8s and your attack will probably be more geared to countering.
