Modified Manchester United Run (25 mins)

Modified Manchester United Runs

Equipment: only need a lined soccer pitch and a stopwatch.

Area used: top of the 18-yd boxes

Process: Participants run repeat box-to-box run, and jog back. Each lap begins at the 1 minute mark. To complete the entire test you will run 22 - box-to-box sprints in 22 minutes.

Repeats (Time limit to run from the top of one 18-yd box to the other / Time left for recovery jog back to first 18-yd box):

1-10: 18 sec / 42 sec  

11: 17 sec / 43 sec  

12: 16 sec / 44 sec  

13: 15 sec / 45 sec

14: 14 sec / 46 sec

15: 13 sec / 47 sec

16: 12 sec / 48 sec

17: 11 sec / 49 sec

18: 10 sec / 50 sec

19: 09 sec / 51 sec

20: 08 sec / 52 sec

The RECOVERY TIME is a slow run back to the original starting line. Players record their last successful run meeting the cutoff time as their levels.

Variation: The full Manchester United Run. Same as modified version, except that players run goal line to goal line, jogging back every minute. Time structure is the same but with the initial run times for laps 1-10 times starting at 25 for the run length and subsequent run lengths dropping one second per lap.

Quick Agility to Rondo (20 mins)

SETUP: 20x20 square for Rondo; Cones around the perimeter for agility and ball work

EQUIPMENT: 16 blue cones; 18 orange cones

 

SESSION

Team 1 (blue) start in the rondo square playing passing and moving.

Team 2 (red) all start at section A:

  • Player 1 dribbles up B cones, then dribbles to C, turns and passes back to Player 2 at A. Player 1 stays at C.
  • Player 2 dribbles up B cones and then passes to Player 1. Player 1 passes the ball to Player 3 at A, then runs through the rest of the cones at D and E before entering the rondo square as a defender through F
  • Player 2 stays at C, Player 3 dribbles up B then passes to Player 2, who passes to Player 4 then runs across D and E and into the rondo thought F
  • This is repeated until all players make it to the Rondo - which starts as 5v0, 5v1, 5v2, 5v3 etc.

Rondo Focus:

  • passing and movement
  • speed of passing
  • 1 or 2 touches
  • moving into space with speed
  • Talking and support
Dribble and Run:
  • Dribbling with speed 
  • Speed of running to work on energy
  • Short and long passing skills - accuracy and speed
  • Rondo work speed and delay to try and win then ball
  • Speed to get to Rondo to assist team mates
