3 v 2
Dimensions: 20 deep x 20 wide
Players: 1,2,5,7,8,9,10,11
Time: 20 minutes
Set up:
2 boxes with one going at a time. 2 defenders to apply pressure.
Mannequins set up around 6 yard box to represent a retreating defence which we want to play behind.
If red defenders win possession then the opposite side begins to play.
Progression:
1. All defenders to track and defend the ball when (and not before) it is played outside the box.
2. add 2 CB's on the 9.

IDP for 1 v 1 & 2v2 defending
To be undertaken while other players do the first two drills before all coming together.
Design: 15m x 10m with 'gates' at each end to dribble through
Function:
This is for those players not involved in the core session.
Start 1v1 defending with players switching roles each time.
Focus:

8 v 8 Position Specific
Dimensions: Half pitch
Time:
Coached 20 minutes
Observed 2 x 8 minutes (rest 4 minutes).
Explanation:
position specific 8v8 where blue start with a pass from the Coach in the middle and try to score. If Red win the ball can they score within 5 passes.
If blue shoot/score a ball is immediately played by the Coach next to the goal down the side the attack came from to mimic a counter attack to encourage the blue players to defend in the positions in which they have rotated to. Again, red have 5 passes to score.
If the ball goes out or blue win possession off of red, reset and start from the central coach.
Defending Team: 1-4-3-0.
Attacking team: 0-2-3-3 (no centre backs)
Objective:
Defending Team: Hold shape and don't allow balls in behind while holding a line above the D. When in possession score in passing goals. If they score & then score a second goal before blue score it counts for 3 (and for each goal thereafter until blue score).
Attacking Team: Score in main goal. Goals that result from combination play using Wide Triangles will count for 3.
Coaching Detail
1. Forward runs in behind the defence
- As players combine can a third player make a forward run that penetrates a defensive line
- Make space - can you draw a defensive player away from the area you want to run through
- Time the run - start as the ball travels to a player that can play forward
2. Rotation
- as 8/10 drops deep can the 7/11 come inside to open the wide channel for the 2/5 to move in to.
- if 7/11 drop in to the half space can the 8/10 make a forward run in to the wide channel.
3. Quality of chance, make the right kind of decision on what ball to play when you are looking to create the chance
- if by the touchline when do we cut-back and when to dink to the back post
- if played in to the half space and we are well balanced shoot across goal.
- when the ball is received in the top corner of the 18 yard box can we cross through the penalty spot to that far, top, corner of the 6 yard box
4. Risks, encourage players to
- try angled forward passes
- dribble, draw and eliminate opposing players
- try one touch passes as often as possible when combining
- be patient and wait for the opportunity to make the penetrating pass

1,2,5, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11
Time: 15 minutes
Pattern 1
Server plays 5 who touches forward, playing an angled ball so 11 can receive on far foot.
8 makes a timed run into the wide channel and receives the ball in behind the full back.

Coaching Points:
Pattern 2
Server plays an angled ball to 7. 7 plays 2 and makes a quick run in behind to create space while 10 rotates to wide space.
2 plays 10 in wide channel and receives a quick bounce pass and 10 runs in behind while 7 drifts in behind the CB then makes a darting run in behind to receive the through ball from 2. 7 can either shoot or play the cut back for the 9 with 2 drifting in to the box and 10 taking up the cover position.
