2v2 stopping crosses
defenders start in their own box and play a ball to wide attacker.
Small goal acts as a crossing target.
Attackers to try and combine to get a cross in. (score in small goal)
Defenders close down space quickly and defend wide area to stop a cross coming in.
swap sides every 4-5 turns.
Coaching points:
Close down the ball quickly to get the attackers head down.
Focus on communication, does the defender follow the overlapping player to stop the cross or does the winger follow his player all the way down? both are correct as long as there is quick communication and decision making.

Defensive shape
Defending 6v6 continuously.
score in small goals when you win the ball back.
Coaching points:
Continuation of previous drills in defensive shape.
Fullbacks get out to winger as soon as possible and get their head down to limit options/stop crosses.
everyone shift across as ball is moving from side to side and leave furthest player spare to keep spaces limited for attackers.
midfielders/defenders communicate and make quick decisions on who is tracking runner.
Get set early in the box and defend crosses with good bodyshape, being able to see the ball and the player you are marking.

Animation 1 (20 mins)
1 on 1 defending ( following your runner)
2 attackers pass the ball between them while the defender closes down the ball on his and drops off after the attacker has passed the ball.
The attacker thats being defended can choose at what pass he makes a forward run to receive a 1-2.
Once the attacker plays the ball the defender must follow the attacker and make sure he gets to the ball first or gets touch tight to block a shot/cross.
change sides every 4-5 turns.
coaching points:
We want the defender to get tight to the ball without over committing and being beaten by the 1-2, so we are looking for the defender to really get low and on the half turn facing the attacker ready for any movement.
Once the attacker makes his forward run we want the defender to follow the player and not get caught ball watching and turning towards the ball.
Progressions:
Turn it into a 2 v 1 where the defender closes off the opposite attacker and shows the player with the ball down the line.
