Switch of play out of possession (20 mins)

Welsh Way General Practice Switching Play / Out of Possession

Understand when and how to stop a switch of play based on the

pressure applied by the defending team

Organisation

Area Size 20 x 30 Mtr with half way line, 2 x Mini goals for the Reds to attack and 1 Goal for the Blues to attack.

5 Blue, 5 Red, 3 Yellow bibs

Footballs Behind the Goals

5 v 5 with 3 common players in yellow + 2 x Goalkeepers

The session details

Teams try to switch play after 3 passes, they can use the common player but can't switch from one outside common player to the other. After a switch the Reds can score in either mini goals and the Blues can score in the regular goal. Common players can't score. Blue goalkeeper can save at either mini goals.

4 x 3 min + time for terminal feedback

For this session I will be working with the Blue team out of possession but managing the Red team to keep to the main in possession principles. If the Blue team is having more success in possession they will be challenged by making it harder e.g less touches/timed countdown. The idea is for the Reds to have more of the ball which is why the 2 mini goals are there to encourage more switching of play if one goal is defended well.

Challenges, Conditions,Targets

1. At least one player in possession must stay in the opposite half of the ball

2. Extra point for the red team if they can score by switching to the mini goal on the other side of the first switch.

3. Less touches for the out side common players.

4. First time finish

5. Extra goals for switching play from one half to the other in one pass

Key Points

Out of possession

BLUE Team

1. Force the direction of play, speed and angle of press.

2. Defend narrow

3. Leave the furthest player

4. Stop the switch at source

5. Block passing lanes

RED Team

In possession

1. Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)

2. Use limited touches to move the ball quickly.

3. Speed of switch

4. Weight of pass

5. Movement to receive

6. Switch in as few passes as possible. (Not possession Game)

What to expect.

1. Out of possession teams will need to press as a team quickly by staying compact with most of the defensive players on the same side as the ball.

2. Players need to close the passing lanes so there is no easy out ball.

3. Leave the furthest players (Shaded) not a danger until he gets the ball by which time the ball will most probably be travelling in the air which gives the defensive team the chance to move across.

4. Communication is vitally important as teammates need to know who's going to press and who is going to block of the passing lanes.
