2v2 Small Group Defense Progression
1) Passive: have two players pass the ball back and forth. The other two defending work on staggered stance and forcing attacker wide. Other defender needs to provide cover in case the first defender were to get beat. attackers are not trying to beat defenders. They just hold on to the ball for 3-4 touches. Switch Roles.
2) Live: 2v2 dribble across the line.
Coaching Points: Where do we force them? Two principles small group defense: 1. Communication, 2. Shape (pressure-cover)

2v2 Game to small goals
set-up: 2 teams, one team is defending and one team is attacking
Organization:
Game starts with defending pair passing ball out to attacking team who is trying to score on big goal. If defending team wins it, they go to small counter goals.
Coaching Points: Is there good pressure and cover? Is there good communication? (force wide, I've got cover, pressure or delay) When do you know when to press and when to delay?

6 v 6+GK: Defending in the defensive third
Progress to 8v6+GK if defensive team is having too much success.
Restarts. Keeper punts or throws ball to offensive team to start. Defensive team has to push up to 40 yard marker. If defensive team wins the ball they score by dribbling through the counter goals.
Coaching Points: What are the cues for pushing up? When ball is cleared or backs are facing offensive goal.

Defensive Warm-up (10 mins)
Defensive Warm-Up Progression:
1) Players back pedal while calling out the number the coach puts up while standing behind.Players then jockey doing the same thing.
2) Players partner up and face each other. One is running diagonally forward forcing the other player to shuffle and shift hip position while going backwards. Player running forward isn't going 100%.
3) Player running forward now does the same thing but at some point takes off and tries to beat defender. Defender must perfect the crossover run to keep attacker in front.
4) Now attacker has choice to break off and run through one of the two side gates. Defender must react quickly and follow.
