A 45 minute practice aimed at developing the scooping technique within handling for goalkeepers. This session took place at Meadow View Sports Complex in Swansea.

Key Factors
Footwork – move into line with the ball, short sharp steps.
Scoop – Body behind the ball (using quick feet), Step into ball with closest leg, body weight going forward (for forward scoop), Head still and over the ball, little fingers touching, palms facing down.
Organisation
Working in pairs. Both GKs will be working at the same time.
GKs will work at the same time; and will work to their individual left and right hand side.
4x to the left.
4x to the right.
Equipment - 4 spots, 2 footballs.

Key Factors
Head steady. Eyes fixed on ball.
Collapse knee into 'K' position.
Palms open to face the ball with fingers spread.
Body weight forward.
Scoop ball into chest and 'complete the save'
Organisation
GKs will work in pairs; 1 working GK and 1 server. Server stands 4 yards away and will roll the ball underarm (along the floor); aiming for inside the spot – GK then shuffles behind the two red spots and will then undergo same sequence on opposite side (working on their left and right side). 8 Repetitions and then swap roles.
Equipment - 4 spots; 2 red, 2 white. 1 football.

Key Factors
Decision-making; Handling (W, Basket, Scoop), Shot-stopping (catch, deflect, parry).
Technical aspects of the handling techniques.
Positioning in goal in relation to the ball.
Organisation
1 working GK; 3 servers – having two footballs each. Servers will position themselves on the edge of the area and will take it in turns to have a shot at the GK. Main focus of this exercise is for the GK to make decisions in terms of handling techniques; and also to assist him in getting in to line with the ball.
1)Servers asked to serve the ball at the GK (along the floor- Scoop)
2)Servers asked to serve the ball at the GK (lifted – W and Basket)
3)Servers can vary – can also aim to score.
Equipment; 7-a-side goal; 6 footballs, 4 spots.

Blocked Practice - 'W' & Basket Re-Cap. (10 mins)
Key Factors
SET Position; legs shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, on balls of feet (or on toes), arms in front - elbows tucked in, head still.
Handling; 'W' shape for head height serves; lift hands and arms up, catch ball by making a W hand shape;thumbs behind the ball.
Basket – Hand position (pinkies together) under the ball – fingers pointing towards the ball, impact on forearms, close hands into chest to secure ball into the body.
Footwork- short, sharp steps - get into line of the ball.
Organisation (5-10 Minutes)
-First phase - will be a brief re-cap of the handling techniques of the 'W' and the 'basket'.
GKs will work in pairs; 1 will be in a 3 yard goal with the other GK standing around 4-5 yards away from the working GK.
Service: - 'W'; will be an underarm throw or a volley aiming for the GKs nose.
-'Basket'; will also be an underarm throw or a volley aiming for the GKs stomach.
Progressions - Figure of 8 around cones, SET and react (footwork element).
