Defending the Wide Overload (10 mins)

Block 1: Defending the wide overload in the final third

Opposition:

Attacking team to play in wide areas and create overloads.

Coaching Points:

  • Full back to press the 11 or 7 when the ball is played to them, showing them down the line to prevent coming inside (protect the middle)

  • Centre back on given side will cover to protect against the overlap. Rest of the back line will slide across (furthest defender to be in line with 6 yard box.
  • 6 and 5 to come across to protect the ball from being played centrally
  • Leave other winger alone but think of body positioning (open body to see as much as possible and be aware)
  • If full back is to underlap, centre back to be aware and cover the full back, full back still to show man wide and use the touchline as extra defender
  • Stay compact to prevent combinations with striker

Defending the Central Overload (10 mins)

This part of the session is looking at defending the central overload.

The Green 6 is allowed to dribble forward with the ball to create a 3v2 overload within the central area of the pitch.

The Red 6 is trying to protect the middle of the pitch so they are blocking the passing lane towards the green 10 but also put pressure on the ball. Body position has to be open in order to show the Green 6 one side of the pitch. The Red 6 will only engage with the Green 6 if they are 35 yards away from the goal.

The Back four are narrow to protect the middle of the pitch as well as forcing the play to go towards the Green 2 and 3 which would be resolved via the previous 2 blocks of work.

The red team have 10 seconds to try and put the ball into the open goals provided on the centre circle which replicate the two strikers which have been removed from this practice.

Coaching Points

Body position for the Red 6

Defensive line being narrow and compact

When to engage with the Green 6

Protecting the middle

Leaving the furthest player

Interventions

Concurrent - Reminders of the tactical aspects of defending the central overload, technical information such as ball speed and accuracy of the passing.

Walkthrough - At the start of the block to show the players the specific practice and what is expected.

Terminal - In between the blocks to show the players the practice or specific aspect of defending the central overload to help with the pace of the session.

Pitch Geography

We have chosen to play with half a pitch with 3 goals used within the practice. This is due to the fact that central overloads occur within the defensive shape and the 1-4-4-2 (flat) formation allows the players to always have 2 central midfielders.

2 Blocks of 4 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between the blocks to enable terminal feedback as well as the players asking questions if this is required.
