Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Possession with screening

Method: 5 v 5 +2 support and combination play

Coaching Points:

• Set up 40 x 30 grid, 5 v 5 with 2 neutral greens in end zones.
• 4 blues v 4 yellows, with 1 blue and 1 yellow in central area. 
• Aim is to create 5 passes then play out either centrally or direct ball to neutral player in end zone.
• If played into opposite end zone, that team keeps possession with quick transition to attack opposite end. 
• Rotate players, look for good movement, passing and quick transitioning. 

Breakout possession using wide play (20 mins)

Method: Breakout possession using wide play

Coaching Points:

• Set up grid playing centrally with 2 sets of mini goals for opposition team.
• Create 6 v 6 in main grid, Whites attacking with Blues defending. 
• 2 white wingers remain high with a ST in the box being marked by 1 blue defender. 
• If whites get 5 passes they transition play through the wide areas with opposite winger attacking the box.
• 2 blues to screen midfield area and prevent passes directly through to the ST. If blues win the ball they transition to score in mini goals.
• Communication, movement, switching of play and finishing is the aim. 

• 1 blue midfielder can drop into the box to aide the defender, with 1 white midfielder joining the play. 
• Rotate players and sides.
