Set Up: Team, divided up as 4 v 4 + 5 and a GK. The 5 neutral players should be 2 OB, 2 HM and 1 CAM. Other teams can be divided evenly. A coach should stand in center cirlce with supply of balls to act as server. The size of the two boxes in the center of the field will vary, depending on numbers of players and ability and should be evenly spaced from the middle and roughly 16 - 20 yards from the box.
The Rules: The ball is played into one of the boxes, and the teams play 2 v 2 + 1 [HM]. After completing 4/5 consecutive passes, the team in possession plays into either the CAM [who is stationed high in between boxes] or the other HM who checks into the center of the grid from the other box. If the ballis knocked out of the box, serve another ball in or play a ball into the other box to change sides. The 3 CM will combine to play ball out to opposite outside back who is making a run up the line. The 2 players who completed the specified number of passes and started the attack will make runs into the box, along with the CAM. The outside back plays a service into the box for the attackers to finish. The coach/server will continue to feed balls into the boxes, alternating opportunities for the teams to attack/serve, etc.
Progressions/Variations: [1] Add defenders of the cross, [2] Add Target player, [3] Allow to only combine through the center without a cross, [4] Change numbers in the boxes, [5] Limit touches both in the boxes and with the combining players in going to goal.
Coaching Points: Weight and accuracy of passes, possesion, movement off the ball to create space, body shape in reception, passing angles, recognizing the chance to switch/attack/get backs involved, movement off ball, runs into the box, service, etc.
