Passing Practice (10 mins)

Set Up


  • Rectangle Area with three mannequins set up in the middle in a line.
  • Two players in middle back to mannequins. Remaining players lining up on corner of rectangle.
Description
  • Simple passing pattern; 
  • Player 1 passes into Player 2;
  • Player 2 sets for player 3;
  • Player 3 makes a penetrative pass to BREAK A LINE through mannequins into player 4;
  • Player 4 passes into player 5;
  • Player 5 passes into player 6;
  • Player 6 makes a penetrative pass to BREAK A LINE through mannequins into player 7;
  • Cycle continues with each player following their pass.
Coaching points
  • One touch preferably; max 2 touches if player has to.
  • Can the penetrative pass BREAK THE LINE with a firm and fast pass?

Positioning Game (15 mins)

Set Up



  • Rectangle Area with four mannequins or poles set up to create 3 gates on the middle in a line.
  • 3-4 players in each end with two in central area.
Description


  • Player look to shift the ball with speed in their own area;
  • They are to play with one touch; two touch max.
  • They are looking to play a penetrative pass that BREAKS THE LINE into the other side.
  • Two defending players are looking to block a forward pass.
  • If successful then the team on other side look to try and BREAK THE LINE back the other way 
Coaching points

  • Good ball speed; ball doesn't stop moving.
  • Can the penetrative pass BREAK THE LINE with a firm and fast pass?

2v2's (20 mins)


Set Up


  • Rectangle Area with two goals occupied by GK at each end.
  • Attacking group lines up at each end; with defending group lining up either side of the area.
Description

  • GK fees ball into attacking player; 
  • attacking player is to receive to play forwards.
  • On his touch two defenders from the opposite side enter the area to create a 2v2.
  • The player in possession is looking to play the ball through to their team mate on the other side of the pitch who can turn and score.
  • If defenders win the ball, they can combine in a 2v1 to score in the goal of the GK who started the action.

Coaching points
  • Can the penetrative pass BREAK THE LINE with a firm and fast pass?
    • Attacking team consider:
      - the importance of playing quickly before the defenders block the space.
      - the importance of breaking the line with good ball speed.
      - If the defenders win the ball, then the attacker must consider the consequences of a counter attack.
    • Defending team consider:
      - Have you scanned/checking shoulder to know where the opposition player is?
      - Can you block the pass into the other side?

Small Sided Game (20 mins)

Finishing Game with a pitch divided into thirds. 

Final third acts as an offside line meaning no player can be in that area until the ball is played in.
