Defending Against Shielding & Shielding the Ball (30 mins)
Organization:
Set up 16 cones in pairs, 8 blue and 8 red
Players should work in pairs
Activity:
Activity 1 - 15 minutes - Players should place the ball on one of the cones, the player in possession
shields the ball and the defender tries to knock the ball off the cone. Players should rotate every 3 minutes and change partners after 7 minutes. Players get a point every time they knock the ball off the cone
Activity 2 - 15 minutes - Players are placed in pairs, one defender and one attacker. Attacking players must shield the ball and move through the gates, alternating red and blue. Every time they move through a gate, they win a point. Every time they are dispossessed, the defender becomes the attacker. Players should change partners after 7 minutes
Coaching Points:
Activity 1 - low centre of gravity, defensive stance, hand out, ball furthest away from the defenders foot
Activity 2 - low centre of gravity, defensive stance, hand out, ball furthest away from the defenders foot, quick turn against the weight of the defender, change in direction and speed
