Description

Principle of Play/Main Moment/Football Problem or Four Core Skills:

  • Attacking/Ball Possession/Striking the Ball

Session Objective: Attacking Principles (U10 – U12) – Penetration/Improvisation

  • Locking the ankle out by pointing the toe down towards the ground.
  • Keeping hips pointed at target.
  • Make sure that plant foot is even with the ball and only slightly to the side of it. (If standing hip width apart the ball should take the place of one of your feet).
  • When driving foot through the ball make contact in the exact middle of the ball (get underneath it and the ball goes up, get to the side of it and you might miss the target).
  • Need to follow through by driving the knee into the chest and should be going forward.

Clean Your Backyard (15 mins)

Session Organisation:

  • Divide the players into two even groups and pair up with someone in the opposite group.
  • Every player has a ball to start.
  • Players with a ball plays a long ball (strike on goal) to his partner in the opposite area.
  • Create a 5m moat in the middle and each end is a backyard. 
  • No players are to enter the moat. Ball is retrieved by coach.
  • Field size 40 (L) x 30 (W).

Rules/Explanation:

  • Players kick the ball to partner in opposite area.
  • Team with the most balls in their area win after the coach calls time.
Progressions
  • The time of sets or size of the area can be adjusted to suit the needs and abilities of the players.
  • With each turn try and beat your previous score.

Technical Coaching Points:

  • As above.

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Correct striking the ball technique.
  • Correct receiving the ball with all parts of the body technique.
  • Players get in line of the ball when receiving.
  • Keep out of the moat.
  • Watch for incoming balls.
  • Swing away.

Session Timing:

  • Complete 4 sets of 1.5 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between sets.
