4-2-3-1: In Possession

Team Shape: In Possession

When the team has possession of the ball the attacking concept needs to be simple. The basic attacking principles are; Spread out to make the field as wide as possible & Push high to make the field as long as possible.

If the team is able to achieve this when in possession of the ball it will with quick quality ball possession stretch the opposition team & also make them vunerable to penertrating passes.

Player/Unit Responsabilities:

GK - The goalkeeper must act as a sweeper & be confident to push up to the edge of the area. This will enable the keeper to pick up/clear and intercept any potential through passes & balls over the top from the opposition.

R/LCD - The central defenders must push up the field when the team is in possession. When we have possession in the attacking half the central defenders should be close to the center circle. This will make sure any lazy attackers on the opposition are caught offside & are out of play, but will also help to compact the field incase we lose the ball.

R/LD - The right & left back's play a crucial role when the team is in possession. They must be confident to push high & wide up the field to become secondary wide midfielders. Possession is circulated & switched to these players to help stretch the opposition as well as encouraging the wide forwards ahead of them to push forward and inside.

R/LCM - In possession we want to encourage one central midfielder to support the attack from behind, while the other holds off incase of quick break aways from the opposition. It is important that these players have quick minds & quick feet to distribute the ball wide but also forward & through the opposition.

ACM - The attacking central midfielder needs to take up positions between the opposition midfielders and defenders to help the team "break lines" when passing forward & through. The attacking midfielder also needs to push forward to support the other forwards inside the box & also have a creative mind to look for killer passes through the opposition.

R/LF - The right & left forwards need to keep the field as wide & long as possible. Try to stay in a wide position to receive the ball to feet, but also receive a through ball behind the opposition right/left backs. The wide players are not only expected to get down the line & cross but to also come inside to join attacks in the box.

CF - The central forward needs to be two things: 1) A platform to build attacks: hold the ball up & layoff/link up with team mates and 2) A finisher inside/around the box. The central forward must have an eye for goal and be able to finish with a number of different techniques.

4-2-3-1: Out of Possession

Team Shape: Out of Possession

When the team lossess possession of the ball there needs to be a "jump start" reaction. The basic defending principles are: upon losing the ball high pressure is placed by surrounding players, if unable to do so the remaining players begin to drop back and slide in field to make the field as small/compact as possible.

If the team is able to achieve this upon losing possession of the ball it will not only surprise & suffocate the opposition immediately, but it will also make the space very small for them to try and pass through the team.

Player/Unit Responsabilities:

GK - The goalkeeper beging to retreat toward goal as the opposition moves forward with the ball. It is vitally important that they also provide communication & support to the defender in front. Let them know where the attackers are!

R/LCD - The central defenders must begin to drop back and move up and down the field as well as side to side across the field together. Always keep an eye on the play/ball developing but also where the nearest attackers are - do not ball watch!

R/LD - The right & left backs must drop back and inside toward the central defenders if they are not applying pressure to the ball. This will ensure that the backline is compact and tight together to deny any quick penertrating through balls.

R/LCM - If not applying pressure together the central midfielder must drop off and get close together & compact. This will deny the opposition the opportunity to play through passes into the attackers as well as make any penertrating dribbles towards the defenders & goal.

ACM - If not applying pressure on the ball the attacking midfielder can drop back to help the central midfielders. However the priority is to try & hunt the ball down together with the central forward & be ready to pounce on any loose passes in the middle to start attacks!

R/LF - If not applying pressure on the ball the right & left forward can drop back goal side of the opposition right & left backs. They must however be ready to apply high pressure when these defender receive the ball and stay with them if they make forward runs. Be ready to pounce on loose/bad passes!

CF - If the central forward cannot win the ball back quickly they must drop back into a central position & save energy. Do not chase lost causes or if the opposition defenders out number you with the ball 2 or 3v1. Be ready however to pounce on loose/bad passes to jump start quick attacks!
