Surface Area - Technical Activity

Aim: Put players in a setting where they are getting repetitions controlling the ball with a variety of surface area's and connecting a pass

Time & Notes: Warm up: 6:30-6:35 & 5:15-5:20. Activity:  5:20-5:45 & 6:35 - 7:00 - Coaches must demo and be enthusiastic.  

Activity / Organization: Players play in pairs going through a series of technical challenges. 

Progressions: 90 second - 2 minute rounds depending on success / failure rate. 

- Players pass, inside of foot, taking their touch across the clone / player & connecting with team mate

- taking their touch across the cone with the inside of right foot only

- taking their touch across the cone with the inside of left foot only

- Taking their touch across the cone with the outside of right foot only

- Taking their touch across the cone with the outside of left foot only

- Taking touch out the air & across the cone, right foot only

- Taking touch out the air & across the cone, left foot only

Coaching script / plan for failure:

-Players will fail to keep their passing on the ground / Coach the technique of heel down, toe up and following through just below the middle of the ball.

- Players will fail to use the hips & have them facing the wrong way / Demo & Coach receiving the ball and opening your hips in the process to take your touch in the direction your going. 

- Players will fail to have their shoulders facing side on to the ball and their arm up to balance & transfer weight when controlling with outside of their foot / freeze, demo the moment and why you want to take a wider touch 'three corners'  

- Players will fail to keep the ball in close proximity to their body when controlling ball out the air/ demo taking that touch towards your body.

Against the grain, ball out the air - Race

Aim: Put places in a setting where they are having to control the ball, connect with a team mate, successfully control the ball from the air in a pressure / competitive situation. 

Time & Notes: 5:45 - 6:05 7:00 - 7:20

Activity / Organization: Players use the surface area's within previous activity to pass through the pattern. When the ball gets to the last player before the shaded area, she chips the ball into her hands, she then throws the ball (under arm to begin with) to the player in the box who has one touch to control the ball with the aim for the ball to remain in the square. For every successful touch the team gets a point, the player then passes back to the start of the grid, players follow their pass in rotation. 

Progressions: 

-Add technical rules depending on the age group / success for example only using the inside of your stronger foot or only using weaker foot to control the ball from the air.

- Add small goal, player supporting the 9 must run onto the controlled ball (9 has two touches to control and set) before finishing in the small goal. Can go to a big goal with older session. 

Coaching script / plan for failure:

Players will fail to perform the passing pattern at game speed with game habits / coach bumping off, scanning, weight of pass and exploding after you play the pass. 

Players will fail to control the ball out the air / coach judging the flight of the ball, being on your toes and ask which is the biggest surface area of your foot, encourage them to use the inside of their foot.

Aim: Put players in a setting where they can implement the skills / focus area they've been working in within a game setting

Time & Notes: 6:05 - 6:30 & 7:20-7:45. Drag out the topic by adding bumpers, if the ball is played to them it must be in the air, so they can control the ball to then connect or serve into the box. 

Activity / Organization: Players play 9v9 or 7v7. Adapt with numbers.
