Welcoming Scrimmage (15 mins)

Welcome Scrimmage / Play-Practice-Play Methodology - U9/U10

US Soccer would like us all to use a new practice methodology the season. It's called Play-Practice-Play. The idea is to get the players playing as they arrive by getting them going in a game. As players arrive we add to the game until we get to 3v3, 4v4, up to 6v6. This method serves the players and coaches by:

1. Getting the kids playing right away. Their favorite part of practice.

2. Allow for everyone to show up before we start the practice activity or lesson for the day.

3. Get some energy out before the lesson starts and to help players be more attentive to during the lesson.

You should play for 15 minutes and then get into the two training activities before ending the practice with another scrimmage.

On some days you can do a full field scrimmage and on other days you can do a 2v2 or 3v3 scrimmages. It doesn't always have to be the same each week. The key is just to get them playing at the start. Need at least 2 players to get the game going then add players to a team as they arrive.

Middle Team -U9/10 (15 mins)

Middle Team Setup: 20yd long grid with 5yd outside zones and a 5-10 yd middle zone

Players are split equally into three teams of 2 or 3. The two outside teams try to pass or shoot through the center channel back and forth for 1-2 minutes. Outside players are trying to see how many successful passes make it through to the other side without the ball going in the air or out of bounds. Defenders are trying to deny the passes across their channel and forcing the white team to pass sideways. To speed up the game, the white team players only have 3 touches or 3 seconds to make a pass.

Coaching Points:

Change the "middle team" every minute. Remind outside teams that they can pass laterally within their zone till they find a good opening to penetrate with a pass. Remind white players move to find a good passing lane to receive pass. Never stand and watch. Be active!

Players can only move within their zone. They cannot enter other zones. White players have a 3 second window to pass to keep the game moving.

Variations:

-Play with two to three players in each zone.

-If defending team wins it they can try to score to earn a point.

- Introduce calling for the ball

- Discuss channels as you play it down the side

- Use proper push pass technique

- Get head up to read the situation/use deception

- Encourage team to pass laterally until they find openings to penetrate

Monsters Loose (15 mins)

Set Up: 20 x 20 yard area

Organization: Have the players freely dribbling in the area with a ball each or you can add a ball for each pair of players like shown. On the coaches command the monsters (in Blue) enter the area and try to knock the balls out of the area. If a pair looses their ball they may assist the other pairs by helping them try to keep it in play. When all balls are cleared you can do another round with new monsters. The Monsters cannot double-team until final ball is left.

I recommend staring with one monster and letting the group have some success and then once they are more confident then add a second monster.

Coaching Points:

-Vision-get head up

-Move to support for players with the ball-Don't stand and watch. Be active

-Passing and receiving techniques

-Verbal and non-verbal communication- we want to hear you

Closing Scrimmage (15 mins)

Final Scrimmage - Play 4v4, 5v5 or 6v6 (depends on numbers of players present)

The last part of the Play - Practice - Play Methodology is to end with the game. You can start the game office with restrictions based on the lesson for the day but make sure the last 10 minutes is free play with no restrictions.

At U9 and U10 teams play 7v7 (6 field players and a GK). The next slide is the view of a game field.
