2. Cover

Objective: improve our ability to defend in They Phase 2-3
Organization: Back 4 and midfield 3 + GK (8 total players) VS 8-9 attacking players + neutrals.
Progressions: attacking team tries to score. Defending team tries to win the ball and get it to the neutral players. When the ball is passed to the neutral players by defending team it is now the attacking team's ball again. Defending team must step and take the ground. Neutral players should at times attempt to serve the ball behind the defense.
Important Rule: when you restart with another ball at the midline make sure the back 4 starts above the 18. Create a restraining line (here a blue line) with a few cones where they must start above.
Coaching Points: (1) Pressure/Cover/Balance; (2) Defenders must scan the field at all times...check their weakside shoulder to see the field; (3) They should always be asking: (a) what's going on with the ball? Is there pressure or no pressure on the ball, (b) what's going on with the opponent is there a threat or no threat, (c) what's going on with my teammates? Are we organized or not? (4) GK communication of positioning is critical. (5) When the 3/4 slide across they must get on the outside shoulder of the other team's 9; (6) Timing of letting forwards run themselves offside; (7) If we clear the ball taking the ground "STEP" then BEFORE the attackers can serve it sideways on and ready to drop; (8) Marking in the box; (9) Don't cross in front of other defenders to pressure; (10) Don't drop below 18 if ball is central; (11) When stepping out of the box be aware of ball dumped back post.
