Coaching the front 3
3 principles to consider when starting
- Stretch the backline - Keep wingers as wide as possible which forces full backs to either spread OR not mark effectively
- Look to unbalance - Making diagonal runs as oppose to straight and predictable runs, also in between the back 4
- Get in behind - Making the runs in behing will allow the midfield to play passes, making runs in between defenders
Considerations
7+11
- Hold the width looking to stretch the back line
- If the back line remain compact receive the ball and attack the fullback 1v1 with either the nearest midfielder or the full back supporting/overlapping creating a 2v1
- Dont allow your movements to become readable, mix it up
1) hold the width (outside of the full back)
2) position yourself on the inside of the full back supporting the 9
- Develop an understanding with the 2+3 when to take over the width of the pitch
9
- Recognise when the gap appears to make a diagonal run in behind
- Recognise when the defence are defending with a low block
Can you
1) drop into zone 14 looking to pull a player out of position
2) receive the ball to feet and combine with a 3rd man runner
- Get shots off early
7,9+11
- recognise when the opposition are playing with a low/high block and understand how this changes our approach
- recognise good possession and offer creating movement/runs in behind to unbalance the oppositions defence
8+10
- look to make 3rd man runs into the box
- be positive with your passes always look to penetrate
- support behind the ball to allow the ball to be recyled
2+3
- recognise when to overlap
- hold the width when 7&11 move between the CB's and FB's
- Deliver early crosses between the GK and backline

Stretch the backline
7+11 to stay wide and be disciplined in possession
What if the defence remain compact? This will create space on the outside for the wide players.
What if the defence mark tightly? This will create gaps to play between defensive units.

Looking to unbalance the oppositions defence
Rotational movement from the front three
- This prevents the oppositions defence becoming comfortable and keeps them constantly guessing.
What if the opposition are defending well and preventing us?
Can the 7+11 move between the CB and FB creating a consideration for them whilst our 2+3 look to exploit the space on the outside holding the width of the attack.
Movement between the front 3
- Player that receives the ball, one comes short infront and the other runs inbehind. Defenders will be pulled out of position causing gaps in the defence.
What if the opposition are playing a high block?
Recognise when the opposition are playing a high block when in good possession. This is the key chance for the forwards to make runs in behind of the defence, exploit gaps in behind.
What if the opposition are playing a well organised low block?
Can the front 3 look to unbalance the oppositions defence by receving the ball infront of the back line.
- Players to recognise players moving out off position to force a gap for runners to exploit
- 3rd man runs from deep (e.g. 8 &10) to unbalance the back line.

Transition
- When attackers lose possession, their shape and discipline is key to how they will retain possession.
- Attackers to press aggressively and in numbers to retain possession (WITHOUT overloading ball side)
- Defenders to retain possession, play from the back and play to '10' who will be situated behind the coned area, looking for the ball to be played in behind.

Overloading (2)
3v2 situation
- 3 attacking players recieve the ball from a GK long kick
- Upon recieving the ball, all 3 attackers drive and are direct towards the goal
- 3rd defender to track back to force game realistic movement/ speed, encouraging attackers to think quickly and make positive choices
Coaching points:
- Change of pace and direction
- Ball moved unpredictably
- Utilisng the advantage of the spare man on the overload
- Utilise the width to penetrate oppositon
- Exploit space
- Decision making

Switching Play
- (9) starts with the ball and passes to either winger
- Winger passes the ball to (10) who then plays the ball back to one of the wingers
- Play between the 3 players until both wingers have recieved the ball and the space has been utilised
- Upon this, (10) plays a through ball through the coned area for one of the wingers to recieve the ball
- Opposite winger heads to the back post whilst (9) ensures their run is in front of the defender
Considerations
- Ensure attackers are switching positions after every phase of play
- Defenders to be switched after every 5 minutes
- Emphasise match-like tempo, quality of passing and movement
- Wingers to focus on quality of cross

Warm Up (10 mins)
Pass into central player, who spins the pole and switches play.
Once player has recieved the ball, dribble and drive through the coned area.
Aim of the warm up is to work on technique of passing, controlling, close control, as well as dribbling with the ball, change of pace and direction.
Progressions
1. Middle player comes short for the ball, dribbles past half way, passes the ball to outer player, recieves back for a 1, 2.
2. Return to server, make the run to the opposite end of the pitch whilst server makes pass.
3. Middle man looks to come short, player with the ball plays long pass over the top, middle player follows the pass.
