Description

Against Perth we were too reliant on our wingers and strikers creating opportunities by dribbling at the opponent and missed multiple opportunities for our midfielders to play wall passes.

This session aims to show when and how to make a wall pass to create and attacking opportunity.

Passing Practice (15 mins)

Structure / Organisation

  • Cones set up as above for passing practice.
  • Minimum 12 players, if 2 short can use goal/rebound net to replace CB, in which case 9 will retrieve ball and pass to FB/CDM to start movement.
  • FB/CM plays to 7/11, who makes a wall pass with 10.
  • 7/11 cuts back to 9 who passes to CB to restart movement.

Progressions/SUSD

  • PROGRESSION: Increase pace/tempo, restrict to 1 touch passing.
  • PROGRESSION 2: Change direction of play (cut back played from right wing/left wing)
  • PROGRESSION 3: If enough players in the game, the waiting player at 7/11 position is a passive defender on the 7/11 for the wall pass.

Coaching Points/Influence

  • Playing accurate passes off both feet. Use different surfaces to play where appropriate/necessary.
  • Time runs to meet ball without having to stop.
  • Can we play passes in front of our teammates to attack.
  • Move quickly after playing a wall pass.
  • When you want to play a wall pass, come level with the teammate in possession.

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Structure / Organisation

  • 4v4 + wide players in channels.
  • Wide players can't tackle each other to start, but if a defender is in front of you, you must pass
  • Ball must be touched by at least one wide player in the move for a goal to count.
  • Only an attacking player can enter the goal area to start with.

Team Task

When a defender prevents you from progressing by dribbling, play a wall pass with a supporting teammate to get past your immediate opponent.

Players Tasks

When a wide player receives the ball, can you move level into a close supporting position to offer a wall pass.

When you play a pass to a supporting teammate, move forward away from your immediate opponent.

After playing to a supporting teammate can you alter the angle of your run to proving an option for a wall pass.

If the player who requested a 1-2 is not ready to receive yet, can you control the ball and play when they are past their marker?

If the defender reads the wall pass and follows your teammate, can you control and shield the ball and play elsewhere.

Progressions

  • Wide players can switch in and out of channel.
  • Defending is allowing in channel to allow for 1v1 opportunities and make defending the wall pass more realistic.
  • Overload/underload team to adjust fairness.
  • Players have touch restriction to ensure they move the ball quicker.
  • Remove channels and see if players keep shape.

Game Training (30 mins)

Structure / Organisation

  • Pitch set up ~40m by 40m in attacking third.
  • 6 v 5 + GK
  • Attacking team starts by playing ball to winger. Defending team must start outside 18yard box.
  • Offsides apply.
  • Blue Attackers can score 1 pt by shooting past the goalkeeper into the net, 2pts for scoring off a cross or cutback from the wide zone.
  • Defending team has 20 seconds to score in one of the two small goals if they get a turnover.

Team task

When you are unable to beat a defender 1v1 can you make a wall pass with a supporting teammate to get into a crossing position?

Player tasks

  • 6/8: When winger cannot beat their marker 1v1 can you get level with them to provide an opportunity for a wall pass.
  • Drop level with the player in possession to offer a wall pass.
  • 6/8: When you play a wall pass, can you aim to play it into the wide zone for your winger to run on to the ball.
  • 9: When your back is to goal and a defender is behind you can you play to a supporting player in front of you and make a run past the defender to receive a wall pass.
  • 8/10: If winger is being pressed high by their opposing full back can you play a wall pass with them where you move forward into the space behind the full back.
  • Can you isolate a defender 2 v 1 to create a wall passing opportunity.

Progressions

- No time restriction for defending team when they are in possession.

- Time limit on attacking team in possession to recreate realism of recovering defenders.

- Adapt numbers on each team for ability.

- Play a joker to give whichever team is in possession an advantage.

Training Game (30 mins)

Structure / Organisation

  • Same set up as before with big goal on halfway and no wide zones.
  • 5v5 + 2 GKs.
  • Game restarts with keeper chosen by coach
  • Offsides apply.

Assess

Count how many times players use wall passes to penetrate past an opponent.

Are players wholly reliant on speed to beat opponents, or do they use their teammates and guile to beat them.

Do players adjust their positioning and body shape to provide a wall pass, or do they try call for them just where they are?

Progressions

- If no second keeper, use two small popup goals instead.

- Reintroduce wide zones to encourage wall passes and through balls into crossing areas.

- Bonus point if goal is scored after a wall pass in build up.
