Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Driven shot

Pattern play

Organization:

4 players at positions A-D.

Same setup on opposite side of field.

Pile of soccer balls at half.

Instructions:

1) A takes touch to outside and passes into B opening up inside in opposite direction.

2) B receives and plays wide to C.

3) C receives inside and plays forward pass to D cutting toward endline.

4) D drives endline, turns and plays back out to C.

5) C plays square ball into B who receives and takes driven shot toward goal.

Coaching Points:

Movement of player B:

- forward to support penetrating pass.

- back as ball is worked back wide.

- check toward wide player to receive, set touch and hit driven shot.

Striking technique:

- plant foot next to/ahead of ball.

- ankle locked, toe pointed down.

- strike through center of ball with inside laces.

- follow through toward target.

Progressions:

P1 - player B on resting side can defend player B on active side after their first touch to set themselves up for a shot.

P2 - double pass + give and go combination play between players B and C.
