Receiving Refresher (15 mins)

Now we introduce the scanning aspect.

This is a 10 minute refresher on how we should receive the ball when we are moving into space.

Split the group into 2.One group on the outside(with balls) one on the inside of the larger square (adjust size if required)

1. To begin with have players go and play a one touch pass to the server then look for another ball, they should look to use both feet during this practice. Change after 3 minutes and swap..

2. Players now approaches the server at an angle, so will perform a movement to shake a defender (2-3 minutes & swap).

3. Now the player should approach the server with an open body position, so that they can see the other players, they should receive they ball on the back foot, move away then turn back in and pass back (3 minutes& swap). Judge the weight of pass.

4. As per 3 but now player receives on the back foot and first touch is into space, and then find another server (3 minutes and swap)

Receiving progression (15 mins)

Continue on from point 4 but now the players work in 3's. 2 on the outside should hold 2 different coloured cones.

When the player moves in to receive the ball (1) they should have a look over their shoulder to scan the picture. As they are doing this the other player (3) will hold a coloured cone in the air and the receiving player (1) will shout that colour.

They will then run and pass to that player (3), who will pass straight back and (2) will repeat the process. Play for 3 minutes and swap.

A progression if required is to say that if a red cone is held up then players must move the ball right and if a yellow cone is held up then we move it left.

Tech Warm Up (15 mins)

Here the blue player 1 will make a movement outside if the square to receive the ball from blue player 2. 1 should have scanned the area of the outside square to find a coned area that is free. he then runs to that cone with the ball.

2 follows his pass to the smaller square. When one gets to the cone and turns blue player 3 should look to move out and repeat the process. Continue for 3-4 min or if players are becoming tired.

Coaching points: Move out to receive the ball at an angle, look and scan over your shoulder before the ball arrives to find a clear area, big touch into the space to move off.

Progression (15 mins)

In this progression, we have changed to two players on the large square. The idea now is that blue player 2 moves out of the small square to play a one two with blue 3. Blue 3 then takes a big touch and moves to a free cone on the outside. As this is happing blue 1 move’s into the smaller square (introducing a bit of position rotation).

When blue 3 gets to the empty cone he should make contact with 1 who will begin the movement again.

Coaching points: Move out to receive the ball at an angle, Body position of receiving player, look and scan over your shoulder before the ball arrives to find a clear area, big touch into the space to move off.
