Description

Objective of session is to coach how to 'play out from the back' while keeping possession and push forward. When possession of ball is lost to attacking team the defending team will 'transition to defend'.

Formation is based on 9 aside using 1-4-3-1 but session can be adapted to suit number of players available.

Play out from the Back with T2D (20 mins)

Method:

  • setup requires a half pitch suitable for 9 aside with 1 standard goal and 3 small goals on halfway line
  • team playing out from the back should be positioned in 1-4-3-1 formation but adapted to suit # players available. Minimum is 1GK, 2 CBs, 2FBs & 1 CM(#6), other players on defending team can be placed at the 3 small goals.
  • the opposing team should have minimum oft 1 striker and 2 wide players to apply pressure on the defending team and attempt to gain possession. Other players can play midfield (see illustration)
  • GK should pass ball to CB who should make pass to the FB
  • FB should attempt to pass ball to small goals to score a point OR keep possession by making pass to midfield or back to CBs
  • scoring opportunity should be created by switching play across back using GK and CBs

  • opposition should attempt to gain ball and score in large goal ; defending team should T2D with FBs dropping back to support CBs

Coaching Points:

  • CBs should have open body position and be located in front of GK so that there is an angle to make pass
  • FBs should make pitch wide and have 'open body position' to receive ball and 'scan pitch'
  • Midfield (#6) should attempt to lose any marker and create space and passing channel
  • all players should aim to keep possession by passing back to CBs or GK
  • players (including GK) should 'support the pass' by falling behind player that pass has been made to
  • if possession of ball is lost then FBs should drop back in line with CBs and 'make the pitch thin'
