The session aims to increase the understanding of compact defending, be it as an absolute counter-attack or for use as a guide to organised, compact units in the middle third - in both cases narrowing the pitch. Requires close proximity support to disrupt the opponent, intercept and transition; explores a number of options for breaking quickly with a focus on the actions of #9 and #10.

#9 & #10 narrow their position, shielding #4 & #8, forcing the red team to play out wide. They are immediately closed by Blue #7,#8 & #10. #4 moves across and #11 sits in narrower also. This squeezes the attacking space wide and also screens any pass into the middle. The desired effect is to force the red team to go backwards. Any error in control (shaded area) and look to intercept.

#9 moves wide. #10 cuts off red #6, ensures enough gap is created to encourage a central pass. Their movement is the trigger for #4 step in front of his opponent, #5 & #6 narrow and prepare to intercept if ball gets past #4. Aim for no space for red #8 & #4 to operate and they are forced back, wide or intercepted.#7and #11 squeeze in from both sides.

Blue team successfully intercept the ball. They hit the channels immediately, in 1 of 3 ways.
1) - FORWARDS ATTACK THE CHANNELS. #9 & #10 work together to the channel, receiving support from #11 or #7 (side dependent) & #8.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
2) - DECOY RUN. One of #9 or #10 makes an obvious run left or right and this is the trigger for the other channel to be hit (drawing red #5 & #6 attention away)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
3) - WIDE PLAYERS LEAD ATTACK. #9 & #10 step 'back' and #11 or #7 are the primary recipient of the pass. ~8, #9 & #10 then turn to support.

A shorter pass out would build in a more controlled manner, through the #8, #9, #10 - looking for combinations, particularly through the middle.
Blue team win the ball back and play to #8, who makes ground and is supported by #9, #10 - one pulling defenders away, the other working more closely. #7 & #11 are now in support and the break goes as a unit, interchanging passes.

Basic Set Up
Blue team (2-4-2) defending deep. Red team (2-4-2) playing high. Red team will build from their GK and aim to get the ball through the screen on blue players. They score only if they get all players (bar GK) into the opponents half. Blue team press with #9 & #10 when red team reach the top of the centre cirle. When the line is broken with ball into their half they do not pursue the ball. Blue team aim to win the ball back and hit #9 or #10 or channels within 2 passes.
