GK Pre-match Warm Up Routine

Warm Up Routine will take between 15-20 minutes to complete, can remove parts if restricted for time, but this complete warm up captures everything needed to prepare the keepers for the game.

Dynamic Warm-Up without Ball (5 mins)

This warm up can be done with a parent or coach or even one of the substitutes from your team.

All that needed is one or two balls and a small area of grass, doesnt need to be performed in the goal if its not available.

Step 1:

Perform running warm up with team, including dynamic stretches.

If not performed with team can be done individually working across the 18 yard box or similar distance. Perform straight runs, side to side, knees up, heels up, open the gate, close the gate, straight kick throughs, side kick throughs, back wards kick thoughs, skip an arm rotations and one or two accelerations, perform static stretching, including back and arms.

Handling Warm Up (5 mins)

Handling Warm Up:

Server starts about 10 yards from keeper, serving the ball into the GKs hand with a volley or drop kick. Aim to try and get the ball straight into the hands, no diving if possible at this stage.

If throwing is more accurate this can be done also. Goalkeeper to catch properly and return by throwing to server

Approximately 10 reps

Same thing again except this time the server will kick or roll the ball to the gks feet at a good pace so that they have to get down and use the 'k' or scoop technique to gather the ball.

6 reps

Diving Warm Up (5 mins)

Diving Warm Up:

Begin with the goalkeeper on there knees, server about 10 yards away again.

Server to roll the ball to the left 3 times and then to the right 3 times for the goalkeeper to perfrom collapse save.

Next perfrom the same exercise with the goalkeeper starting in the standing set position. 3 reps each side

Crossing/ High Ball Warm up

GK to start in goal, server about 15 yards away serve a lobbed ball in front of the gk to collect. Ensure ball is high enough to force gk to have to jump and collect.

If able to cross from the ground this would be ideal, but for accuracy throwing will be sufficient.

5 reps from each side.

Note: If more than one helper have second helper on opposite side and when GK catches the ball, they distribute using over arm throw to feet.

Distribution Warm Up:

Server and Gk start 6-10 yards part, perform first time passes to each other 10-15 reps

Next server moves to about 18 yards away passes ball to gk who has one touch to control and then play ball back along ground, 7-10 reps, try and use both feet

Lastly Server moves back to appropriate distance for goalkeepers ability for goalkeeper to take goalkicks off ground, driving the ball into servers hands, focus on quality not distance. 5-7 reps

Final Handling (5 mins)

Final handling:

Final stage is for goalkeeper to start in goal and server to be around 18 yards away, server strikes ball from ground into gks hands.

Remember youre not trying to score, its all about warming up and preparing the gk for the game, focus on accuracy and quality throughout the warm up.
