Session 1 Defending as a Back 4
Set up - 4 yellow defenders set up edge of box, 4 blue players ready to attack , 4 other yellow players ready to play next and serve ball into blues. Also i optional holding midfield player to join attack to make it 5 v 4 but must always be deep behind all other attacking players.Yellows can move up pitch as soon as ball is played by yellow player 1 who passes to yellow 2, who in turn passes to any blue player. This start allows defending team to step up as ball travels. Blues attack for agreed set of time or until they score or defense wins ball. Defense should try to win ball and pass to resting team if possible. As soon as attack finishes Blues become defenders against next yellow team , yellow team who was defending now become resting team.
Technical /Tactical points
Attacking
Wide midfield take defenders on in 1 v 1 situations or try to combine with hold mid or forwards ( 2 v 1 ) to get behind full backs / centre backs ( give & go) .
Forwards try to offer 2 options one at least stretching defensive 4 by trying to receive in behind ( attacking angled runs , spins) other offering shorter option to feet.
If Forward receives ball to feet option to turn defender if he gets too tight,or set ball back to midfield player , this triggers other players movements to penetrate. Wide Mid could role inside to over load central areas. Wide Mid try to produce crosses into box and other attackers should try to offer near , far post runs and cut back .
Defending
Nearest player presses ball and all others take up good supporting positions with aim of keeping compactness and preventing forward passes. Key aim of all defenders try to intercept, prevent turns & crosses and block shots. Tackle at appropriate times. If out of shooting range show inside / if nearer goal show away from goal ( outside). If ball travels backwards try to step up to get higher if possible.
