Description

Welsh way principles - Defending the overload

Understand when and how to deal with the numerical advatages the opposition have.

Organisation

20X30 area with full size goals at each end (this may vary depending on the age/ability of the players and the physical demands required) X2 goalkeepers and 2 teams of 4 players

Due to the wave game aspect allow the session to be reset and played out in blocks of 3.

2 minute intervention and also a rest period to help maintain the intensity in the practice.

How

-The coach will work with one team on the out of possession principles of defending the overload. (In this case the BLUE team)

-The RED team will still follow out of possession principles but will not be coached on these but will be managed to ensure realism in the practice.

Defending an overload (20 mins)

Explanation

  • Play will start with a blue player attacking the red goal in a 1v1 situation against the goalkeeper. the blue player will have a 5 second count down to get away a shot on goal.
  • Once he has done so, the blue player then becomes a defender, the coach then feeds a ball to a RED player behind the goal, the 2 RED players from behind the goal then attack the BLUE goal in a 2v1, the reds will have a 10 second count down to get a shot on the blues goal.
  • As soon as the RED team get their shot on goal they then become the defenders, the coach feeds a ball into the BLUE team and the 2 BLUE players from behind the goal join the BLUE player already in play to attack the RED goal in a 3v2.
  •  Once again, the coach will play the ball into the RED team, this time in the wide area then the reds will attack the blues goal in 4v3 situation,
  • the shot from the RED team will be the end of the phase and all the players will reset.
  • The BLUE player which played no part in the 1st phase will start the next set.

Conditions, Challenges, Targets

  • The conditions are a 30x20 area with 2 full size goals at each end
  • The target for both teams is to score in the oppositions goal (GK in at both ends)
  • Challenges the RED team will be to;
  • 1. move the ball quickly, commit opponent to the ball in order to create space to exploit the numerical advantage,
  • the 10 second count down will help with the intensity of the session and help maintain realism,
  • challenge the BLUE team to recover their defensive shape as quickly as possible and try to protect central areas.

Out of possession (coached)

  • Protect the middle of the pitch
  • Leave the furthest player
  • Recognise player movements
  • Recover defensive position quickly

In possession (managed)

  • Find the spare player
  • committing the opponent
  • Ball speed
  • Interchange of positions
  • intensity throughout the practice

Progression

  • If RED team are having success we will add a 10 second countdown clock
  • BLUE team will gain a point for delaying and RED team not scoring within 10 second time pressure.

Interventions

  • walkthrough at start of the session
  • concurrent feedback
  • terminal feedback after the blocks have taken place
