Description

Critical Moment Marking and receiving the ball under high pressure

  • Become comfortable receiving under pressure
  • Recognise different types of pressure (touch-tight, 2v1, etc)
  • Defending: Can we win the ball without having to tackle?

Rondon and Critical moment marking to be done at the same time with half groups and then switch

Critical moment marking (10 mins)

Use as a warm-up

If rugby tackle pads are available, use those instead of a 1v1 initially and just use them to lean on player and get them used to the physical pressure

  • If not available continue

Rounds of 20-30 seconds

Critical Moment Marking:

  • Using a tennis ball, 4 players pass the ball around the outside randomly (not into the middle)
  • 1v1 in the middle, aim is to use their body and stick fairly to gain an advantage and get in front of the other player

Looking for:

  • Getting more comfortable making contact with player
  • Getting used to making body larger fairly

Rondon (10 mins)

How it works:

  • Directional (i.e. from player A to B) within the square
  • Players on the outside are not on either team, they are neutral and pass the ball back to whatever team passes to them
  • Players on the outside swap with a player on the inside every 30 seconds or so

Look out for:

  • Encourage close marking at all times
  • Encourage players to move to space but also get comfortable receiving under pressure
  • Encourage players to be dynamic as much as possible (receive on the move, come towards the ball as much as possible)

Receive and get away from pressure (25 mins)

How it works

  • 2 defenders start BEHIND the receiver on the throwdown
  • The receiver posts up into the square and receives the ball from either player on the blue cones
  • Once a ball is fed from either blue cone, players on blue cones join as jump back defenders (simulate recovery)
  • Once the receiver is out of the box the game is live and is essentially a 5v4
  • Queues for extra players are behind any of the cones
  • Players on blue cones who feed the round before become the 2 defenders on the throwdown for the next feed

Rule

  • The receiver in the box can't pass until they get out of the box
  • Defenders who feed from the blue cones and join can't tackle within the box
Objective
  • Practice receiving on an angle and getting out of the box whilst under pressure
  • Play forward / face the pressure after receiving
  • Defensively
    • Apply enough pressure to induce an error without having to tackle
    • (2nd player who starts with receiver) Read the game - Cover the threat in behind or win the ball and make a 2v1?
    • Critical moment marking - Dictate and dominate space in key areas

Keep an eye on:

  • Do defenders become ball focused?
  • Does receiver use their body and first touch effectively to eliminate or protect?
  • Do jumpback defenders get into good positions to slow the game down?

High Transfer into the Circle (25 mins)

Groups of 4 rotate (4 in backline transfer and 4 in the circle, do 5 attacks then swap)

  • Anywhere between the two goals is considered the circle

Variations of game:

1. Defensive team have to win the ball and return it to their back 4 to switch from defenders to attacker (1 ball and continuous)

2. Once ball is in the "circle", both teams can attack in their respective goals (alternate which team feeds the ball, not continuous)

3. Can also be played with groups of 3s instead (changes HB receiving angle, less bodies in the "circle".)

Looking for

  • Critical Moment Marking
  • If free, hold hotline first (line to goal) and step to wide play along it

Note

If really low attacking success rate allow ballside HB to enter circle OR add an additional defender and allow both HBs to enter circle

  • What we dont want is to much overloading, we want attackers to find space in congestion
  • Want defenders to be thinking of their player and the ball which we can't achieve easily if overloaded
