Description

The main goal of the session is to look to draw-in opponent to one side of the field and then quickly look to play to opposite side of the field to penetrate and finish on goal.

The session is setup to imimitate pressure situation in which the players will have to recognize when to get out of pressure situation by switching play or switching the point of attack. This will help them to improve thier skills on how to switch play and also switching the point of attack effectively.

Possession Transfer

Organization:
Two connecting grids are used, each approximately 10 yards by 20 yards. There are five attacking players and one defender. Four attackers are placed on the perimeter of one of the grids while the defender is positioned the inside the same grid. One attacker (target man) is positioned on the end-line of the opposite grid (see diagram). Identify defender by using colored bib i.e. defender hold a bib.

Instructions:
The four attacking players attempt to keep possession from the defender and obtain 4 consecutive passes. After making 4 passes the players must pass the ball forward to the target man at the end-line of the opposite grid. Once the ball has been played to the target man, players 1, 3 and 4 move to the opposite grid to support the target man. The defender follows the play and attempts to win the ball in the opposite grid. Player 2 now becomes the new target man. After obtaining 4 passes the ball is switched back to the original grid. If the defender wins possession or forces an error, the defender replaces the attacker that gave possession away. First pass is always free to allow the activity to commence.

Coaching Points:
- The supporting players must always work to offer the deepest and widest possible angles for the player in possession.
- How wide can I get to give the best possible passing lane?
- How far from the defender can I get to give the maximum time on the ball when the pass is received?
- The player in possession must look to disguise their passing intentions by using step-overs, body feints and head fakes.
- Accuracy of pass when switching play.

Group Development

Organization:

- 6 Goal Game: 6v6.

- The playing area is divided into (3) Vertical ZONES as reference point for changing Point of Attack (POA).

Instructions:

- Attacking team can score in any of the (3) goals and are free to occupy all the 3 vertical zones when in possession. Attacking team (in possession) is looking to create a point of attack by DRAWING in opponent to one side of the field and then looking to quickly play to switch the point of attack by playing into the other side.

- Defending team can only occupy 2 vertical zones when the ball is inside one of the outside channel but they are free to occupy all three channels whenever the ball is in the central channel but must stay in a compact shape.

Scoring:

- One point if team scores in SAME channel that they have possession.

- Two points if team plays to adjacent channel and uses MAX of (1) pass before scoring.

- Three points if team plays to an opposite WIDE channel channel and uses MAX of (1) pass before scoring.

Coaching points when attacking:

- Attacking team should maintain possession by moving the ball quickly.

- Attacking team should maintain possession, draw in opponent and change POA to exploit the weak side. Short-short-long.

- In order to change POA, players must have an open body shape (face forward / side-on to receive and to be able to LOOK forward and PASS forward).

- Passes MUST be sharp to feet to allow the receiver to pass forward quickly...sharp passing to feet allows for Time & Space for receiver.

- SWITCHED ball must be driven, firm, in air or on the ground to exploit defending team being drawn in and exploit weak side.

- Vision: Play with HEAD up and recognize when switch is on.

- Communication: verbal to encourage players to change POA.

Coaching points when defending:

- Proper technique of closing down.

- Always press in the identified situations.

- Speed of approach.

- Pressure the player with the ball, cover and balance.

- Make it compact both vertically and horizontally.

- Prevent the opponent from switching the point of attack or playing forward.

- Stay compact i.e. both vertically and horizontally.

Guided question:

- What do we do if there is no pressure on the ball?

- When opponent switch the point of attack, how do we react and recover back into defensive shape.
