1v1 to Goal Transition Game (15 mins)

Organization:

The first person in line A dribbles forward and attempts to finish a 1 on 1 opportunity against the GK. As red strikes the ball a player from line B blue attacks the other goal and the player that just took the shot from line A must counter press and prevent Blue from scoring/penetrating.

If the player in line A can counter-press/recover, win the ball back, and score a second 2nd chance shot. Game continuous once goal scored or ball goes out.

Coaching Points:

  • Immediate change of speed to pressure the ball
  • Take away the attackers angle for early shot, show them away from goal
  • Anticipate to block the shot, engage physically when possible
  • Transitional focus immediately upon taking shot
  • Timing, angle and position of commitment to tackle
  • Disrupt play
  • Can't get early pressure, look to contain, direct
  • Quick feet balanced and low/side on

2v2 transition to defend (15 mins)

Organization:

-2v2+gks

-2v1 scenario plus 1 recovering defender (shooting player)

--------

-Player A dribbles into zone, and takes shot

-Player B or C dribble out of zone and attack goal

-Player D steps out to defend on Attacking teams first touch

-Attacking blue team= 1 point for scoring

-Defending Red team = 3 points for recovering ball and scoring

Rotation:

-Attackers alternate between B & C

-Defenders alternate between A & D

-Switch roles after 4 reps

Coaching Points:

-Mentality and reaction to recover goal-side (provide cover to pressing defender)

-Immediate pressure to prevent penetration

-Delay attack (1st defender) until play becomes 2v2 - unless can win possession with heavy touch from opponents

-Body position (side on) and quick, short and sharp footwork when 1v1 defending

-Force attacker into dribbling and take away passing option (allowing 2nd defender time to recover)

-GK communication to trigger pressure and shape/recovering player

Progressions:

-Player A and D (Red) can both attack initially 2v1 then waiting Blue initiates transition/attack

3 team Transition to Def (20 mins)

Organization:

4 square Transition Game

3 Teams

4 Squares 20x20

Coach with all the soccer balls.

Red team starts with the ball- Green team is defending 5v2 or 4v1 dependent on numbers and level

Yellow team is spread out in the other grids.

Ball is played to the Red team. They must complete 3/4 or 5 passes then pass it to any of the yellows, All yellow players must get into that square with whom received and complete 5 passes and then look to find waiting team.  Green players on the outsides are allowed to intercept a pass going out to yellow.

1point= every successful pass out to team waiting

Transition- When the ball is stolen by Defending team they must play to the waiting team. Team who losses possession must apply immediate pressure to win back ball before leaving grid or work new press into new grid. The game continues...

Coaching Points

  • Counter Press (disrupt)
  • Communication
  • 2nd defender role (cover, communicate and adjust ready to apply pressure/step in and win ball)
  • How quick can we win back possession-dynamic and aggressive
  • Direct play towards 2nd defender and/or away from options
  • Block, poke, hip or hook tackles (techniques)
  • Side on and balanced with low balanced approach, light feet until tackle
  • Anticipate play when possible to intercept

3v3 transition (20 mins)

Organization:

Set Up: 25L x 30W 3v3 transition

3v3 game, when a goal is scored the player that scored must run around the goal before they can get back and defend. The 3 players that got scored on - go off the field. The next 3 players come on QUICKLY with a new ball and attack opposite side. This creates a 3v2 situation until the 3rd defender recovers. If the ball leaves the field without a goal being scored then all 3 players from both teams go off and new players come on.

Coaching Points:

  • Can we win the ball early
  • Decision- Delay/contain vs pressure/disrupt
  • Show Opposite: show pressure then drop off to intercept or show contain then sharply press
  • 2 defenders shift to lock down immediate threat
  • Recovery run (angle, speed and decision)
  • Connect first pass upon winning ball back
  • movement to support counter attack upon winning ball back

Progression: When shot on goal happens any attacker can go around/touch any goal (even if no goal is scored)
