Pitch Set up

3 way rotation (10 mins) followed by 10 mins game play.

  • Tackle boxes
  • Tackle technique
  • Numbers game
Rotation order:
  • U6 (Bex + 2 young leaders) -  Numbers game/Tackling technique/1 v1 tackle boxes
  • U7 (Simon + 1/2 young leaders) - 1v1 tackle boxes/numbers game/tackle technique
  • U8 (SJ + 2 young leaders) - Tackling technique/1v1 tackle boxes/numbers game
I will deliver tackling technique with your support and then float between match play.

For game play. Looking at 5v5 type numbers. If a lot of U7s, will add in with U8s (ability based). If we have large numbers, we will make another pitch.

Numbers game

Players are lined up in a q behind their cone. Coach calls out two numbers. The first number refers to one team and the second number refers to the other e.g. 2/1. This would make it a 2v1. Players have to dribble through the corner goals to score a goal. Once players have completed their go, they join the back of the line.

Key coaching points:

Attack:

  • Move at angles and not straight at the defender.
  • Change direction and speed (after skill)
  • Attack down the weak side where possible (+ make space by taking left before going right)
Defence:
  • Close down attacker
  • Stick length and step away
  • show (channel) attacker down your strong side
  • Low and side on body position
  • Use jab tackle to get opponents eyes down or when their stick comes off the ball (snake tackle)
  • Use block tackle when opponent make mistakes or get to close (road block)

1v1 tackle boxes and tackling technique

Player 1 passes to player 2. Player 2 then has to try and dribble the ball over the end zone line. Player 1 has to try and tackle and then dribble past the opposite end zone. If a player scores, they then pass the ball to their opponent.

Try and match players up on ability.
