Technical Practice (15 mins)

Layout

  • Full area 50x30 Split into 4 channels/zones

Organization
  • 4 reds
  • 4 blues
  • Get into pairs (1 blue & 1 red)
  • Bibs laid out ready by cones in each box
Instructions

  • 1vs1 Defending
  • Reds start as defenders
  • Red player passes the ball into their partner and close them down
  • Defenders aim to either force players out of the area or make a tackle before the attacker dribbles onto their line (highlighted in yellow)
  • After 5 attempts swap over so blue becomes the defender

Progressions
  • Make the pitch wider to give the attackers more space, which makes it harder for the defender
  • Decrease length of the pitch to give defenders less time to react

Regression

  • Reduce channel width

Coaching Points

  • Disrupt/Delay/Direct
  • Pressure/position/patience/power
  • The focus of the mechanics of getting in line with the ball (Choosing which side to force the ball)
  • Begin to close down as soon as the ball is passed (get out quickly)
  • Body position - bent knees makes it easier to react as a defender is already active/low center of gravity
  • Force the player onto their weaker foot/away from danger by adjusting body position
  • Stay on toes (don't be flat footed)
