Description

What:

  • Playing out of the back (attacking from defensive third)

Where:

  • Defensive third of the field and middle third

Who:

  • Primary: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6. Secondary: 10, 7, 11

When:

  • During goal-kick restarts, in possession in defensive third

Why:

  • To penetrate middle third, and attack forward as fast as possible

Objectives:

  • Create space to receive
  • Be BRAVE and show for the ball!! (don't hide!)

Introduction (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 10x10m grid (adjust as necessary, 12x12m)
  • Blue: 4 players, 1 ball, inside grid
  • White: 4 players, on the outside of grid (1 per side)
  • Red: 4 players, inside grid, 1 ball each
  • Six 90" intervals, 1-minute rest

Instructions:

  • Red: passes to white and receives ball (1 point)
  • White: receives from Red and passes back (1 point)
  • Blue: Pass ball among themselves, each pass 1 point.
  • After 3 intervals, where each team does one of each, use "Progression 1"

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Can we open our bodies to playing area when we receive? 
  • Can we use the back foot to receive?
  • Can we expand the visual space before we receive? 
  • How/Why? Scanning 

Progression:

  • Red: passes to white, and receives from DIFFERENT White (1 point for every time it receives)
  • White: receives from Red and passes to a DIFFERENT Red (1 point for every pass)
  • Blue: Pass ball among themselves, each pass 1 point, passes have to split 2 players from Red/White

Main Activity (30 mins)

Organization:

  • 16x16m grid
  • Blue vs Red: 4v4 +4
  • White: Neutral on the outside
  • 4-minute games or first team to 12 points
  • Six 4-minute intervals, 1-minute rest

Instructions:

  • 4v4 + 4
  • Each time Blue or Red pass to white and receive = 1 point
  • If player receiving from White is not the player who passed = 2 points


  • 4-minute games, or first to 12, winning team becomes targets - if they reach 12 points before 4-minute mark, White dribbles in upon receiving 12th point and game continues with losing team staying in.

Conditioned Game (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 16x16m grid/field
  • 2 mini-goals on each side
  • 5v5 + 2, GK cannot use hands
  • Contention line in the middle
  • 6-minute halves

Instructions:

  • Blue vs Red
  • Score on mini goals
  • Regular goal = 1 point
  • If all players are on attacking half and score, goal = 3 points
