Warm-Up (15 mins)

Organization

20x20 grid set up, players split evenly with some on the outside, some inside. 

Players on outside with a ball.

Activity

Players on the inside look for service from outside. Following sequence:

- One touch return on the ground

- Half-volley return (Served mid-air)

- Half-volley return, first touch with thigh (Served mid-air)

- Half-volley return, first touch with chest (Served mid-air)

- Header returned mid-air (Served mid-air)

1v1 No Space (15 mins)

Organization

10x20 yard grid, minigoals at either side

Attackers at one end, defenders on the outside of the grid at halfway.

Coach with balls on other side of defenders at half

Activity

Coach serves ball into attacker, as ball travels defender activates. Attacker looks to score in opposite minigoal, with defender looking to prevent. If defender wins ball they look to score on other minigoal.

Players switch roles halfway through.

Coaching Points

  • Positive Touch towards target
  • Don't trap the ball
  • Take the space you have before defender arrives. 
  • Look to unbalance defender and use pace to deny them a chance to recover.

2v2 No Space (20 mins)

Organization

20x20 yard grid, minigoals at either side

Activity

Coach serves ball into attackers, as ball travels defenders activate. Attackers look to score in opposite minigoal, with defender looking to prevent. If defenders win ball they look to score on other minigoal.

Overload (25 mins)

Organization

20x20 yard grid, minigoals at either side

Attackers at one end, defenders on the outside of the grid at halfway.

Coach with balls on other side of defenders at half


Activity

Coach plays into the 2v2 in one half, with the attacking player in the 1v1 half moving into the 1v1 grid. Attackers in the 2v2 look to play into the 1 attacker in the other half. Once ball is played, a new defender enters the 1v1 grid to defend the 1v1. One attacker from the 2v2 can enter the other half to create a 2v2 opportunity and look to score on minigoal.

If the defenders win the ball at any time, they look to score on opposite mini goal.

Teams change roles halfway through.

Coaching Points

  • Positive Touch towards target
  • Don't trap the ball
  • Take the space you have before defender arrives.
  • Look to unbalance defender and use pace to deny them a chance to recover.
  • Work together to attack the space behind the defenders
  • Move the ball quickly to unbalance both the primary (on-ball) and secondary (support) defender
  • Play the 1 attacker when it is on.
  • Join 1v1 quickly to create an overload.
  • Ball should not stop moving.
