1 v 1 Directional/Nondirectional
Directions:
- 2 players in a square set up as shown (or from different cone if you want to vary angle of pressure)
- One player starts with ball and passes to opponent, then immediately pressures ball
- Attacker tries to score by stopping ball next to either of the red cones
- Defender tries to win the ball. If successful, then becomes the attacker and tries to stop ball next to blue cones immediately
- Once a player scores or ball exits square, roles switch and repeat.
Coaching Points
- Positive first touch towards side away from pressure and towards goal (cone to either side)
- Protect ball with body as defender closes down space (Side on with ball on outside and defender on inside)
- Turn to attack other cone if defender commits to one side (Turns hips sideways or lunges in)
- Attack at pace when separation occurs (Use body to seal out defender)
- Strength to hold onto ball while decelerating to score
- Confidence to use skill to unsettle defender and gain advantage
Progressions/Regressions
R- Make defender passive and have player "beat" the defender with turn
R- Have attacker attack a side of the square instead of stopping the ball next to the cone.
P- Add a teammate to the attacker to make it 1 v 1 + 1
P- Have defender start in middle of square rather than other side, to decrease closing distance
P- Take away directions and have the players play 1 v 1 possession (keep away) for a set amount of time

1 v 1 Turning
Description:
- Defending player (white) dribbles half way into zone then passes to attacker (blue)
- Attacker dribbles and tries to score in either goal
- Defender tries to win the ball and score in either goal
- Switch sides after every round
Progression/Regression:
R - Allow them to play 2 v 1 with an extra attacker
P - Players can only score once they have passed the blue line, marked by the red cones.
P - Turn goals to face outward
P - Allow them to go 2 v 2
P - Shorten the distance that the defender passes from so the attacker must control it

Chaos
1 v 1
Instructions:
- Players are put into partners
- Players are set up across from their partner, with one player on the ball
- On coach's signal, every pair of players begins a directional game of 1 v 1, scoring on the goal across from them
- If player scores, he/she backs up to about halfway to allow other player to get ball and begin attacking again
- If the ball goes out, one player retrieves it and continues the game
- Play only stops after coach calls time
- Games last 3-4 minutes with 1 min debrief between games
Coaching Points
- Coach shouldn't try to stop the game during the play (Allow the players to "own" their game). Instead, pull individuals or pairs to the side to make coaching points
- Encourage players by challenging them with specific instructions (ex. try to beat the player with a specific skill, don't get scored on in the next minute, etc)
- At the end of each match, bring the players in and lead a short Q&A session (Try your best to not give the answers to the players, make them come up with creative answers to your questions)
Progressions:
- Challenge players to play 1 v 2 instead of 1 v 1 (This also promotes cooperation with the 2 paired together)
- Create scoring variation (i.e. nutmeg is worth a goal, certain skills are worth more points, certain skills win your game automatically if successfully leading to a goal, etc.)
- Increase numbers to make 2 v 2, 2 v 3, or 3 v 3 games in the same environment, adjusting your Q&A and coaching points
- Adjust the goal positions or types of goals to get different types of attacks (gates or larger goals instead of pugs)
- Put a square in the middle and require players to enter square with ball before they can score in any goal (Creates opportunities to incorporate turning in the game rather than face on moves)
