Pitch Set Up

Beginning Pitch Set up

USE THIS THROUGHOUT THE SESSION!

Passing Mechanics

  • Look at target
  • Eye on ball
  • Angle of approach
  • Non-kicking foot alongside ball in a comfortable position
  • Strike Centre of ball with inside of the foot
  • Firm ankle
  • Follow through towards target.
Throughout the session, expand player knowledge on mechanics. Ask and explain. Give them visual demonstrations too.

Technical (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Passing Mechanics - on previous scree

Organisation

  • Exactly the same happening in both groups at the same time. Diagram just to show the progression.
  • Set up 2 squares with the cones. Area size depending on ability of players.
  • Add 1 cone into the centre. It doesn't have to be a large one
  • Split players into 2 groups - 8 per group.
  • Take 1 group to demonstrate whilst the others observe. Players are to organise themselves as shown on diagram 1. 2 players behind the cones with the ball and 1 player behind the cones without a ball.
  • The player passes the ball (clockwise to begin with. This then changes as a progression) and then follows their pass.
  • The player receiving the ball is to jump off their cone. Emphasis that the player receiving is to jump off the cone as the ball gets to the feet of the player performing the pass
  • Repeat for 5 minutes
  • Call the group who demonstrated originally over to the other group to give them a chance to observe a drill and the other group an opportunity to demonstrate.
  • Ask the players to organise as shown in the diagram. 1 player on the outside cones, 2 players on the inside cones facing each other.
  • The player with the ball is to pass into the player the opposite end of the inside cone who will then pass to the player on the adjacent cone. That player will then play down the side  and then repeat.
  • The player receiving the ball is to jump off their cone. Emphasis that the player receiving is to jump off the cone as the ball gets to the feet of the player performing the pass, especially within the middle player.
  • Walk through this with both groups in order to develop understanding.
  • Pick up the cones used during the transition

Progression/Regressions

  • Introduce more footballs to speed up tempo/take away to slow down
  • Introduce a time and ask the players to see how many passes they can do within a group within that constraint.

Coaching Points

  • Lots of repetition of the technique within the practice.
  • Are players in the correct position to receive the ball? are they on their toes and receiving on their back foot to be able to play out with the other?
  • Demonstrate the practice and ensure players understand. Observe the practice and identify the issue if something is continuously going wrong.
  • Implement the mechanics of passing in the technical drill. Here we can use individual player interventions to attempt to perfect the technique after identifying the issue.
  • With longer passes do we need to alter technique? Can we lift the pass by striking the bottom of the ball? If the players are struggling with length should they switch to using laces to get the correct distance?
  • Introduction of team mate considerations, where do they want the pass? e.g. when its being laid back to the them they want it slightly in front so they don't have to break stride

Skill (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • High intensity. Coach the tempo
  • Bring the cones in from the previous drill to make the area size as shown in the image
  • 2 boxes back to back, one made up of 2 different colour cones in order to help players visualise the 2 grids.
  • Team A are shown in red. Team B are shown in blue.
Organisation
  • Organise players into 2 teams and hand out bibs. Do this tactically in preparation for the small sided game.
  • Players in team A to organise 4 in grid 1 and 2 in grid 3. These are labelled in the diagram.
  • Coach set up where the 'official' is in this diagram. During the transition, get the players to give the balls and collect them in near your set up. An example of this is in the diagram.
  • Team B is then set up in a line by the coach in readiness to come onto the pitch and carry out their press.
  • The coach will feed the ball into team A. As soon as that ball goes into play, the first player from team B will go in and try and win back possession.
  • The target for team A is to make 3 passes within grid 1. Once those 3 passes are made, they can then extend and the players within grid 2 become included. Team A would be able to use the space in both grids in this scenario.
  • Once team A has completed 3 passes, another player from team B can come in to help try and win back possession. This applies to every 3 passes. The overload then changes.
  • Once the ball is won back or the ball goes out of play - whichever comes first - the players reset. Team B clear the pitch and go to the back of their queue whilst team A organise into their positioning in preparation to receive the ball.
  • The coach then feeds another ball in and the process repeats.
  • Ensure that there is consistent swapping with the players in grid 1 and grid 2.
  • Swap the teams around throughout so team B are in the grids and team A are coming in to press. 20 mins on this activity so should be aiming for each team to have 10 mins on each.

Progressions/Regressions

  • Limit the amount of touches players are allowed to take
  • Increase/decrease the overload
  • Expand the space
Coaching Points
  • The coaching process can be used for a whole group intervention. The players within our group have not have previously participated in or experienced a high intense passing drill such as this. Observe and look for the mechanics and where players can improve.
  • Observe and identify player body positioning within the players during this skill activity as this was observed as a reason players lost the ball on a previous Sunday.
  • Continue to expand player knowledge and encourage the answers out from them.

SSG (25 mins)

Key Factors

  • Because we have 3 coaches, 2 games of 3v3 is easier to manage. If for any reason we do not have this on the day, we can adapt accordingly. However we would not do 6v6 as this is not a small sided game and the success rate will not be the same.

Organisation

  • Using cones - Outside cones remain the same - (large shown in diagram but use different colour small), just move them around. Place the smaller cones down the middle to create a touchline and then set up 2 sets of goals either side of each pitch.
  • Tournament style game across the 2 pitches to keep it enjoyable and to get the players engaged.
  • Players are bibbed up into 4 3-a-side teams (to encourage pass and move) with 4 different colour bibs.
  • The teams will play for 10 mins before rotating.

Progressions/Regressions

  • Expand/Condense the area size accordingly
  • Alter the size of the goals depending on success rate.
  • Change the time limit to create an added pressure onto the players

Coaching Points

  • In the game realistic scenario, utilise the coaching process as players might learn better visually here and we can fix mistakes here before we go onto the pitch on game day.
  • Because of the 2 separate groups and the advantage of multiple coaches here, you can carry out a smaller group intervention.
