Four Line Shooting (10 mins)

Simple Shooting Drill: 4 lines, two lines either side of the goal (should be at least six yards away from the post for safety). Balls are at the line on the right side of the goal. Goals are 36 yards apart, two cones in the middle inline with the posts of the goals.

Player B in the line without a ball checks into the cone in the middle of the area. Once he gets close to the cone, Player A with the ball passes the ball. Player B lays the ball off for Player A, who must shoot one touch before crossing the line into the penalty area.

Coaching Points:

  • Concentration should be on proper strike.
  • Layoffs should be weighted so shooting player can hit the ball first time.
Progressions:
  • Switch balls so left foot is the focus
  • Player B turns and shoots instead of laying the ball off

Crossing/Finishing

Crossing and Finishing (15 mins)

Three lines: 2 central and one wide right, all of them around 25 yards from goal. Left two lines have soccer balls. One pole about 8 yards away from the leftmost line as a defender.

Player A dribbles past the defender (pole) and shoots. He immediately turns around to play a wall pass with Player B. B shoots and A combines with next player in line to send a long ball to Player C. A and B make runs into box and C crosses to either one.

Coaching Points:

  • Tight dribbling (add a skill move once comfortable) and shot should be quick after beating defender
  • Runs into the box need to have near post and far post runners
  • Run shape should be bent and attacking the ball (upside down check mark)
  • Cross can be high or low but it must be between the penalty spot and 6 yard box.

Bread & Butter w/channels (20 mins)

6 v 6 game (including goalkeepers) + two neutral players in the channels. Primary playing area is double the 18 yard box in length, same as the 18 in width (typically 44 yards across). Two channels on either side of the area with one neutral each.

Game plays like a normal 6v6. If the ball is played into the channel, the neutral player can play with one touch back to the team that played him, or he can take two touches and cross the ball in front of goal. This is a situational choice and the neutral player has control of which decision to make.

Coaching points:

  • Game should be high scoring, or at least have many attempts on goal. This is the last progression in a shooting session so the small field encourages shooting from everywhere.
  • Players should be looking for a good finishing opportunity at all times, and should practice trying to shoot when they have a small window (1/2 yard).
  • When ball is being crossed, focus on runs in front of goal. They should be deliberate and attacking near post or far post areas.
  • Goalkeepers should be organizing team and in constant communication.
