Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Receiving on the back foot. This allows you to play the ball in a forward direction. Passing with the inside of the foot so the pass is well controlled and receiving players can get the ball under control with ease. Controlling the ball with the inside of the foot. Players who will be receiving the ball should try to stop the ball with their instep so the ball can come under their control easily and they will have the ball in front of them so they are aware of it's position.
Technical Tactical
Players are put deep and wide so short passes and dribbles for an attack can be made once the goal kick is taken.
Technical Physical
Players must be able to put a lot of force behind their passes so the ball is easily and efficiently received.
Technical Psychological
The players must be confident to attempt to start play quickly from a deep area on the pitch so they can handle the pressure from their opposition.
Technical Social
The players, in particular the goalkeeper, should be communicating set up positions to the other players in order for the short goal kick to work.

Short goals kicks

How to set up:

  • Goalkeeper sets up the ball.
  • Both defenders push far out to the wings, nearly touching the side line and the midfielder  stands close the goalkeeper in a surfboard position to receive the ball on the back foot.
Who and where do the passes go:
  • If the keeper plays to the midfielder, they can then pass the ball out to the wingers who can make runs.
  • If the keeper passes to either side defender, the ball must be passed IN FRONT of them and not behind them. This is so play can be progressed forward and reduce pressure from the opposition.
