  • Dribble towards a cone and drag back using sole of your foot.
  • Dribble towards another player and turn out.
  • Cut outside of the right/left foot.
  • Chop right/left foot.
  • Chop then use outside of foot to change direction.
  • Cruyff turn right/left foot.
  • Step, Cruyff, roll explosive burst.
  • Roll the ball with sole of foot across the body use outside of foot to change direction.

Turning quickly

Turning as a group or split into 2 group's dependant on numbers.

Player A passes to player B who times his run to receive the ball halfway from the passer.

Player A turns and passes to player C.

Player C passes to player D who meets the ball halfway from the passer and turns to pass to next player.

Coaching points

How do we turn? Left/Right

Inside of the foot.

Outside of the foot.

Sole of the foot.

Don't run into the space too early.

Can you do it on one touch?

Tell the passer to be vocal and shout turn!

Hand out to feel for the defender and scan over your shoulder.

Receive on an angled run.  This will help to receive on the half turn but also offer another option to pass across to another player.

Q&A

Turning with back to marker (20 mins)

Spread players out into both halves of the 20x20 to make more space.

Using keepie ups or throw the ball into the air and do a Cruyff turn whilst the ball lands on the ground. (Timing)

Cruyff turn, explosive burst out and change direction.

Get into groups of three using one ball between all three.

A=Passer

B=Receiver

C=Defender

Player B receives the ball with back to defender how will you turn to face your opponent?

Defender starts off being passive so that the receiver gets plenty of success.  Rotate all players after 5 attempts.

Come short and turn.

Receive, take a touch and turn.

Drop your shoulder to trick your opponent and turn the opposite way.

Flick the ball around your opponent using the outside of the foot then roll the opposite way.

Get in tight to the marker and roll them.

Turn on one by dropping off a yard and pivoting bringing the ball facing towards your opponent.

Can you peel off on angle to receive on the back foot and knock it passed your opponent?

1v1 attacking

Defender make it more realistic by trying to win the ball.

Can the attacker turn the defender and get over a line for a point?

 Coaching points

  • Scan before you receive.
  • Feel for the defender with an arm.
  • Drop a shoulder to trick which way you turn.
  • When dropping short hold off the defender with a little push.
  • Head-up don't run into other groups.
  • Exaggerate the turn using your body and arms to fool the opposition.
