Key Factors

  • Blues look to play from the back through the centre halves who then have 2 options of either passing to the central midfield players or directly to the wingers who are placed in the wide channels.
  • Aim for the blues is to get the ball wide before creating a goal scoring opportunity, therefore the ball must go wide at least once before blues can have a shot at goal.
  • Blues that are in the wide channels are unopposed to encourage them to drive forward and deliver a cross into the danger zone.
  • Reds should be managed to sit in as a low block to encourage the blues to come on to them, if reds win ball back they have 15 seconds to try and score themselves before the ball starts again with the blues goalkeeper.

Organisation

  • Goals brought up to the edge of the 18 yard box and 2 wide channels created for the top corners of the 18 yard box.
  • 7v7 with a goal keeper on each team, if odd numbers a common player can be introduced.

Part (30 mins)

Key Factors

  • Working with central defenders in the wave game.
  • 2 pairs of central defenders who alternate on each wave, the ones not involved wait by each post to allow a quick transition between waves.
  • The aim of the defenders is to force the attackers wide of the red lines, if they do this the wave stops and the defenders win a point.
  • Attackers will also pair up (blues) and alternate on each wave, the number 10 for the attackers remains the same (yellow).
  • One blue will pass to the yellow to start the wave, the yellow then passes back to the other blue and then the play is live with a 3v2 (blues and yellow v reds).
  • Attackers must make 3 successful passes once the play is live before being allowed to get a shot off.
  • Key things for defenders to consider - body shape, whether to press the ball or remain as a block due to the attacking overload, when to engage.
  • Once the ball has gone outside the red lines or the attackers have got a shot away the wave finishes.

Organisation

  • Goal from first part of session to be pushed back to its natural position.
  • Balls on the halfway line.
  • Cones to mark out the red lines shown which will act as a target for where the defenders want to force the players/ball out to.

Key Factors

  • Blues looking to pick up from part one of the session, getting the ball forward quickly to create chances.
  • There is no requirement this time to go wide before shooting but should still be considered as a favourable option.
  • Reds are looking to pick up from part 2 of the session and defend in a low block, forcing the blues wide and away from the centre of the goal area.
  • Free play is encouraged as the last part of the session however coach can look to bring in conditions to add to the realism eg restriction on touches, time to get shots off etc.

Organisation

  • Same layout as part one of the session but the wide channels are now removed.
  • Again 7v7 with keepers and common player to be utilised if odd numbers.
