Defense in transition (15 mins)

Block the Passing Lanes (Rondo with Restricted Passing Zones) we will need 2 zones

This practice is a great way to develop passing accuracy, teamwork, and decision-making skills in young players. It's a variation of a Rondo drill with restricted passing zones.

Setup:

  • Field size: 20 yards x 20 yards
  • Equipment: Balls, cones
  • Players: 5 players (2 attackers on each side, 1 defender in the middle)

Playing Area:

  • Divide the field in half with a line of cones or flags.
  • Create one, two, or three passing lanes (depending on the players' ability) by placing cones or flags 1 yard apart to form narrow "doorways" or "lanes" connecting the two sides.
  • Place three small goals (cones or flags) at the dividing line, creating mini-goals on either side of the center defender.

Gameplay:

  • The two attackers on one side of the field try to pass the ball back and forth while the defender in the middle tries to intercept the pass.
  • The attackers can pass freely to each other on their side of the field.
  • Restricted Passing:
    • To pass to the attackers on the opposite side, they must pass through one of the created passing lanes (mini-goals).
  • Loss of Possession:
    • If an attacker makes a mistake (doesn't pass through a lane, kicks the ball out of bounds), they switch places with the defender in the middle.
    • The defender can only leave the center area if they steal the ball or if an attacker makes a mistake. They cannot leave if they kick the ball out themselves.

Coaching Points:

  • Focus on Passing Accuracy: Encourage attackers to focus on making accurate passes through the designated lanes.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Emphasize communication between attackers to create passing opportunities and openings.
  • Decision-Making: Encourage attackers to think about when to play short passes and when to use the passing lanes.
  • Defender Positioning: Guide the defender to stay central and anticipate passes to cut off passing lanes effectively.

Progression:

  • Increase Difficulty: As players become comfortable, you can increase the difficulty by adding more defenders in the middle or reducing the size of the passing lanes.
  • Introduce a Neutral Player: Add a neutral player (coach or another player) on one side of the field with the attackers. This player can provide additional passing options and increase the complexity of the drill.

Additional Tips:

  • Keep the game short and fast-paced to maintain attention.
  • Use positive reinforcement and praise players for good passes and communication.
  • Modify the difficulty based on the players' skill level.

switching the play. (20 mins)

  • Specific: switching the play.
  • - Understand when and how to switch the point of attack based on the pressure applied from the opposition.
  • Make the pitch big
  • Maintain width
  • Decision making when to switch
  • Who can switch?
  • Exploit the space
  • Ball speed

Organization / Area Size

4 mins on 1 min break 4 mins on.

40 yards long by 65/70( pitch width )

7v6. Attacking team: 3 CM, 2 wide players, and a striker. Defending team: Goalie, 4 backs, 2 center mids.

How:

  • Defending team. Can we stay compact. Can we force them wide and back. Can the center mid follow their runners to allow the center backs to stay central on the striker ( 9).
  • Walk through
  • We want the ball played into a winger as quickly as possible who is on the touchline over the defenders shoulder(even with the defensive line). 8 to make an under lap through the 18 into the wide channel. 9 needs to between center backs to keep the center backs central. this will open up space for the 6 to come in and receive the ball between the 6 and 18. The 9 should then check in fron of the defneder to link play to the 10 to switch the field. ( show other center mid pressing the 6 to open up the 10) Make sure the winger comes in when its wide to score then get wide again once it gets to the 6. ( ball to the 6 is his trigger to drop off.)

  • Possible problem:If center back tracks again we should cross into are 9 who should make a run in front the defender.

  • The goal is for the team to move the ball from one side of the field to the other to create a goal scoring opportunity. I will coach red team and only manage the red team on how to switch the field of play.
  • Explanation:
  • Red team have to switch play after starting with the ball in a wide zone before they can score. If blue team wins the ball they look to score in one of the 3 small goals.
  • Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
  • Can you turn and switch play quickly.
  • Can you move the ball side to side in the midfield to create an opening.
  • 1 point for the switch, extra point for a goalie, 1 point for the defending team to score on small nets.
  • Can you find the striker's feet to help play out to the other side.
  • Can the three center mids create openings and check into them with the ability to turn and go the other way.
  • Key Points:
  • Can the center mid center and striker turn and play out the other side.
  • Can we find space to turn into
  • Can we communicate and check our shoulders to have information on when we can turn and where we should turn.
  • Can we dribble if necessary to create the space for a turn?
  • Interventions:
  • Concurrent, Terminal, Walk Through, Coaching Process

Defensive block and high press (20 mins)

Organization:

  • Setup a boxed area that takes up the offensive third around the 18-yard box, i.e., 30 by 65 yards
  • Attacking players line up as a 3-2 configuration where left winger, center striker, and right winger stay high. Center attacking mid and center mid stay central in the back of the 18-yard box
  • Defending team plays a backline of 4 with 2 center midfield players (center defensive mid and center mid) + goalie

Instructions:

  • The attacking team always starts the ball centrally where the coach supplies the ball at play
  • 5v6+goalie game
  • Attacking team scores at goal, defending team can score at either mini goal to counter attack

Technical & Tactical Coaching Points:

  • How when spreading out do we disorganize our opponent?
  • How do we create 2v2 situations on either edge of the 18-yard box?
  • When can we play a through ball into the middle of the 18-yard box
  • When can we cross into the 18-yard box?

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Remove a defender from the opponent - regression
  • Add a center player as a defender for the opponent - progression
