Technical Practice

Mechanics

1) On toes

2) Eye on the ball

3) Get in line with the ball

4) Decide and present surface towards the ball

5) Relax on impact


Set-up:

  • Area: 8x8m box
  • Timing: 3x4 minutes
  • Place players on the outside of the cones.

Explanation:

  • Players pass on the outside of the box.
  • Once players make the pass, they have to follow the ball to the next cone.
  • Change direction every 3 minutes.

Coaching Points;

  • Can players stay on toes.
  • Can players keep their eyes on the ball.
  • Can players get in line with the ball.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression:

  • Limit touches by placing a time constraint on the players with the ball (3 seconds before passing).
  • Competition: How many passes can they make in 1 minute without losing control or miss placing the pass.

Regression:

  • Run with the ball instead of passing.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

  • Can players pass on the first contact.

Conditions:

  • Players can receive the ball and pass on their weaker foot.

Skills Practice

Set-up:

  • Area: 15x15m
  • Timing: 3x4 minutes with a minute rest period.
  • 2 Players are given blue bibs to act as defenders

Explanation:

  • Every other player has a ball.
  • On the coaches whistle players in possession travel to a cone and produce a change of direction before accelerating away and then passing to a teammate.
  • Players off the ball should be constantly on the move within the grid.
  • Blue players will attempt to dispossess players with the ball.

Coaching Points;

  • Can players keep their eye on the ball.
  • Can players get in line with the ball.
  • Can players decide and present surface towards the ball.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression:

  • Remove some of the cones players have to dribble around.
  • Add another defender from 2 to 3.

Regression:

  • Lower amount of defenders from 2 to 1.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

Challenges:

  • How long can players deny defenders of the ball.

Conditions:

  • Can players control with their weaker foot.

Targets:

  • Can players change direction at every cone.

Small Sided Game

Set-up:

  • Area: 36x28m area with two goals either end.

  • Add 2 channels down the each end, running down the length of the pitch 2m wide.

  • Place players into 2 teams.

  • Timing: 2x5 minutes

Explanation:

  • Aim of this practice is to focus on control, looking to encourage passing and running with the ball.
  • Start with conditions, 3 passes before being able to score. 
  • Players in the channels isn't allowed to be tackled and more.

Coaching Points;

  • Can players keep their eye on the ball.
  • Can players get in line with the ball.
  • Can players decide and present surface towards the ball.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression:

  • Players in channels allowed to tackle opposing player in same channel.

  • Players in channels allowed to join in anywhere on the pitch if the ball is passed to them

  • Increase the amount of passes needed before scoring from 3.

Regression:

  • Remove the amount of passes needed before scoring.
  • Make the gates bigger and add more.

Challenges:

  • Can players utilise both wide areas before scoring

Conditions:

  • Places have to use the wide areas before scoring.

Targets:

  • Can players use their weaker foot to score.
