4v4+4 Rondo (15 mins)

A variation of Pep's favorite Rondo.

Format is 4v4+4 as shown. Object is for team in possession (Navy to start) to maintain that possession with assistance from the Jokers (Red) and play up and down the grid.

Coaching points:

-quick decisive movement by the outside players and jokers, and the inside joker.

-Open body shape to receive.

-Defenders stay compact, move as a unit to cut off passing lanes.

Play intensely for 3-4 minutes, then swap teams (Yellow go outside, Navy come inside to defend). Rotate teams and Repeat. Rotate Jokers

Progression:

-Rather than play for a fixed time, incorporate a transition: when Yellow win the ball, they quickly distribute to a Joker, then swap places with Navy and continue in possession until Navy win the ball back.

Midfield Triangle Drill (15 mins)

This is all about keeping hold of the ball using an overload and a triangle midfield shape. Great for getting midfielders to think about their shape and where to move to receive the ball.

WHY USE IT

Tactical: Understand the Triangle Shape, Space Awareness, Open Spaces, Possession of the ball

Technical: Ball Controls, Passes

SET UP

Balls, bibs and cones in an area 25x25 yards. 3 sets of 5 Minutes

HOW TO PLAY IT

Must divide your team into two different groups with different color bibs. Two players stand on the outside of the grid, as shown on the diagram, and three players play possession inside the grid, keeping their triangle shape at all times. Once the team loses possession of the ball, they must try to win the ball back as fast as possible, regain control of the ball, and pass the ball around the grid. Players can only pass/give the ball to their teammates with the same color bib outside the grid.

Progression: Every time a player passes the ball to somebody outside the grid, the two players must switch places and continue with possession.

TECHNIQUE

In Possession: Players must be able to communicate, so they keep their triangle shape at all times. Simultaneously, the team in possession of the ball has to have a high player to penetrate and skip defensive lines.

Without Possession: Players must coordinate how they pressure and defend as a unit. The person closer to the ball must pressure the player in possession while the other two players try to close the gap between them, so the ball doesn’t go through the two players supporting the player trying to win the ball.

Animation 3 (15 mins)

GAME SITUATION

Mark out an area and split it into three equal zones of 30x20, as shown in the bottom picture.

Use two teams. Each team lines up with a keeper and two defenders in the defensive zone, three midfielders in the middle zone and one striker in the attacking zone.

The aim is for the keeper and two defenders to play the ball out of defence in a 3v1 situation.

Now one of the defenders can break into midfield in order to combine with the three midfielders in a 4v3 situation.

The aim is to now free one midfielder to join the striker in the attacking zone to score in a 2v2.

In this game, the chance to score often comes when a team loses possession and a counter attack is quickly launched by the opposition. The team that scores most goals wins.
