Physical Game/Competition Environment |
Organizational / Instructions
Knockout
The area of participation will be laid out by the cones.
Within this area, the children will be dribbling their own basketballs.
The goal is to knock one another's basketballs out of the line of cones.
Forfeits of having your ball knocked out:
10 performances of an exercise i.e, starjumps, burpees.
Coaching Points
Dribbling:
- Keep the ball at waist height.
- Bounce the ball with your fingertips - not slapping the ball with palms.
- Keep the ball in front, about 1-meter distance max.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
- The coach could make the game more competitive by having the children lose lives instead of performing exercises. This would leave one child left the winner.
Adaptations:
- Make the space bigger so they have more room to get away from each other. If there are no enough basketballs, players could work in pairs and each time they knock someone's ball out or at least attempt to, they switch who is dribbling ans the other follows behind.

Technical Theories of Motor Skill Accusation - Fitts and Posner |
Organizational / Instructions
CopyCat
In pairs, children will be labelled 1 and 2 - you could put Players in different bibs to help them remember.
Both will stand behind a red cone each.
They will stand across from each other, each holding a basketball.
Player 1 will perform different skills. This could be:
Seated Dribbling.
Standing Dribbling.
Dribbling around the cone etc.
Whilst Player 1 is doing this, Player 2 must try their best to copy them.
They will have 1-2 minutes each before switching over.
This is a good way to try learn from peers and get used to handling the ball.
Progression
Follow the Leader
The area of which the children can move around in will be laid out by the green cones!
Player 1 will dribble the ball in any direction they choose.
Player 2 must follow them in the same directions, doing the same actions - dribbling!
After 1-2 minutes, players will switch over and Player 2 will become the leader with Player 1 following them.
Coaching Points
Seated Dribble:
- Sit on floor with legs crossed.
- Use left and right hand to dribble around the body - clockwise and anti clockwise.
Standing Dribble:
- Keep good balance by bending knees slightly.
- Try keep the ball close to body - the further away it is, the harder it will to control.
Dribbling Around Cone:
- Be aware of surroundings.
- Push down on ball and absorb the force with fingertips.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
CopyCat
- Players could be allowed to move forward to one another and then backwards towards their cones. This helps introducing movement with dribbling and having them to think about their space awareness.
Follow the Leader
- Pairs could have one ball between them and when the time to switch comes, Player 1 could perform a pass to Player 2 and vice versa, therby introducing anohter fundamental skill to the practice.
Adaptations:
CopyCat
- Players could be moved closer to one another to possibly see better or focus on one dribbling skill before trying to practice other ones i.e., only performing standing dribbling. If there isn't enough basketballs, Player 2 could practice the movements with their hands whilst Player 1 does the same with the ball and then switching over.
Follow the Leader
- If there is a lack of equipment, players could work with one ball between them, and then pass to each other when the switch occurs. The space could also be made smaller, so the pair can focus more on the dribbling and not as much about moving round the area.

Social Behaviour Change Model/Method - Giving Positive Feedback |
Organizational / Instructions
An area will be laid out by cones - in this case they are yellow. This will be our makeshift court unless court lines are available.
Team 1 will be in Green bibs and Team 2 will be in Red (or no bibs).
Both teams will be trying to tap their corresponding coloured cone with the basketball. They will have to implement their dribbling and passing skills to execute this.
By not introducing the net/shooting yet, this means the children only have to focus on two of the fundamental skills and it lifts the worry some may feel at not being able to shoot as well as other might.
Conditions:
ALL PLAYERS MUST BE PASSED TO BEFORE GOING FOR A GOAL!
This means that those who may not be as strong/confident in basketball are still getting a feel for the ball and it encourages good teamwork between the children; also maximising participation.
Coaching Points
Chest Passes:
- Keep elbows tucked in - NO CHICKEN WINGS!
- Ball should go straight to receiver's chest.
- Step forward to generate more power.
Bounce Pass:
- Push the ball down with fingertips.
- Aim for 2/3's of the way towards the receiver.
- Ball should be caught at waist height.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progressions:
Addition of conditions
- Players can only perform chest passes before going for a 'shot'.
- Players can only do bounce passes before going for the cone.
- Everyone must have a shot of dribbling before going for a goal.
Adaptations:
- The teams could be made smaller so there is more chances for everyone to be passed to. This would also be good if the environment is smaller as to avoid overcrowding.
- Depending on spacing, there could be two games going on at the same time to ensure maximum participation.

Split children into groups; 1 - 4.
Assign each group a stretch according to what cone they're at.
Yellow: Reach for the Sky
Red: Ground Down

Purple: Arms Across
Each station will be 30 seconds long before switching round.

- Stretch fingertips and then relax before repeating.
Ground Down:
- Stand with feet shoulder distance apart.

Adaptations:
- Coach does the stretches as they go if they are struggling to remember.
Debrief:
The coach should offer the participants an opportunity at the end of the session to speak about what they learning throughout the session.

Organizational / Instructions
Traffic Lights
The area in which the children participate will be designated by cones.
The children will begin jogging around in the circle, changing direction, and keeping their heads up. The coach will have 3 different colored cones: green, orange, and red. They will switch between these cones, holding them high in the air, which will help to encourage the kids to keep their heads up.
Green = Go
Orange = Do the exercise on the spot
Red = Stop
The exercises will change between jogging, high knees, heel flicks, and jumping, etc.
Coaching Points
- Jogging: Keep head up and shoulders back.
- High Knees: Move arms up and down to help bring knees higher.
- Heel Flicks: Lift knees to a 90-degree angle at hip height.
- Jumps: Land with knees bent to avoid knee injuries.
Progressions / Adaptations
Progression:
- The addition of a basketball will help the children to begin implementing one of the fundamental basketball skills.
Adaptations:
- The coach could be calling out the colors as well as showing them high in the air if children are struggling. The space could also be increased to avoid participants bumping into each other.
